Was he "The Man" back in the day?

I just saw that yesterday's US Bank victory by Mr. Pavin was his 15th career title on the PGA Tour. With his last title being the 1996 Colonial, was he "The Man" back in the early to mid '90s? Obviously with the Tour going to longer "bombers" courses, his opportunity to win is limited, but he put on a great display of shotmaking this week.

I was kind of amazed that he basically just flicked his wrists on a lot of those shots yesterday and was still able to get them out about 230 yds. With a swing like his, no wonder why he's under 270 in driving distance.

I remember he was the guy you didn't want to come up against in the Ryder cup. Fourball, foresomes or singles he just got it done, long putts, chip in's, the works. A lot of heart.

Pavin was a great competitor, but if I recall, no one liked cheering on the little guy.

I distinctly remember my college hockey coach mocking his running out of the bunker to see where his 4 wood on 18 landed. Yes it was a great shot, but he looked so stange with that "Biker from the Village People" mustache.

Is Pavin the slowest golfer on tour or what??? It was painful to watch him hit. He would sit there for a half an hour selecting his club and then he would take 3 casual practice swings and the step back and visualize his shot and then finally swing. Obviously it works but it was very difficult for me to watch. Sabbatini would have punched him in the face! :man_in_love:

I'm a firm believer that NOBODY is as slow as Ben Crane. Whatever works as long as you're not being penalized.

As for me, if I'm on a course with nobody ahead of me, I can get around in about 2 hrs as a single...3 hrs in a foursome.

My favorite golf memory on tv is Corey Pavin in 1995 at Oak Hill. My parents house is 5 minutes away from the club so it was so cool to see it on tv. I did not go but my dad was on duty as one of the firefighters serving the event during one of the days. When he was there all he told me about was Corey Pavin. You had every great player in the world and he said Corey was the coolest guy to watch.

Anyways, we were both home watching Corey chip in on 18. I remember both of us jumping out of our seats so high and high fiving my dad. I thought for the longest time that Corey Pavin was the coolest guy in golf. Not for any greater reason than the fact that he was the man for that moment. I will always remember it.

I don't know if he's the man, but he sure is inspiring to me because I'm a short-hitter, but seeing him be last in driving distance (229 I heard; that's nuts, I can average that on a good day), but first on the leaderboard. Tomorrow I have a tournament and my game plan is to hit my hybrid 3 iron (or possibly hybrid 2 iron) off the tee (we'll see tomorrow which one I choose) because today my driver was very poor. Of the 15 fairways there were today, I hit 1 out of 9 fairways with my driver (the very first hole, and it wasn't even a good drive; it was less than a foot away from the first cut and it was only 220 or so out because I hooked it). However, when I layed up or played safe and hit my hybrid 3 iron, I hit 5 out of 6 fairways, and when I missed it, it was still somewhat playable. My highlght was on a 350 yard par 4 where I hit my hybrid despite putting the water into play. The other 2 guys in my group hit driver, and 1 of them piped it down the middle and the other guy put it in the trees. I was the least stressed because I knew where my ball was going. I'm gonna play like that all day tomorrow and hopefully I'll play better than I did today (T8 today, but I had the 2nd best score on the front nine, I just played like junk on the back). Accuracy is what counts, and that was proven by Pavin, and by Tiger at the Open.

I was looking for a new set of irons about the time he won the US Open with his Cleveland "VAS 792" irons so I got some. Ugly clubs but they served me well for many years. Just replaced them this summer with a new set of Ping G5's. I guess I always rooted for him over the years because "we both used the same clubs", LOL.
