Wie Penalty...... again

i think TGC said she hit a moss on her back swing.

she thought it was okay if you hit durt, but not moss.

 

i though dirt, moss..... no, no's.

 

is this wrong?

rule 13-4 of the Rules of Golf, which prohibits touching the ground in a bunker prior to making a stroke.

Yes, that also includes loose impediments in bunkers, leaves, rocks unless local rules preside.

 

Except as provided in the Rules, before making a stroke at a ball that is in a hazard (whether a bunker or a water hazard) or that, having been lifted from a hazard, may be dropped or placed in the hazard, the player must not:

• (a) Test the condition of the hazard or any similar hazard;

• (b) Touch the ground in the hazard or water in the water hazard with his hand or a club;

• or© Touch or move a loose impediment lying in or touching the hazard.

LYTHAM ST. ANNES, England -- For the second time in her brief pro career, Michelle Wie ran up against golf's rule book and was penalized two strokes Friday at the Women's British Open.

 

The 16-year-old from Hawaii hit a piece of moss in her backswing in the greenside bunker at the 14th hole. She found out after her round that she had broken rule 13-4c.

 

That gave her a seven on the hole and she finished at 2-over 74, 10 shots behind leader Juli Inkster. She's at 4-over after two rounds, three strokes inside the expected cut.

 

"It's not good after you play you find out you add two more shots in the end," Wie said. "The par saves I made on 17 and 18 feel as though they count for nothing in the end."

 

Wie wasn't aware of the rule infraction Friday until she went to sign her scorecard and was informed by officials. The sand clearly moved, and the incident was picked up by TV cameras and tournament officials.

 

 

"Well, I knew I hit the moss, but I guess I knew the rule wrong," Wie said. "I always knew from the time I started playing golf that if you swing through it, it would be OK. I knew I hit the moss but I guess I knew the rule a little bit differently.

 

"So it's a good learning experience. But I'm only 16."

 

In her first pro tournament last October at the Samsung World Championship in Palm Desert, Calif., she took a penalty drop for an unplayable lie during her third round. At the end of the tournament, officials ruled she made her drop at the wrong place, should have taken a two-shot penalty and disqualified her for signing an incorrect card.

 

Wie said she had no plans to read the Rules of Golf now that she has been penalized twice in less than a year.

 

"Well, they're not actually great reading material," she said.

 

It was the culmination of a frustrating day for the teenager, who converted putts from 12 and 18 feet on the last two holes to save par.

 

"I thought I played solid today. I just couldn't get anything going. I had a lot of great putts today," she said. "I felt I rolled the ball a lot better than yesterday. The greens are very tricky, rolling a little different from yesterday.

 

"But I feel the last two putts on the last two holes will get me ready for the weekend."

That's such a basic rule, it's shocking she could be so nonchelant about it. The "Gosh, I'm only 16" excuse is getting old. I know quite a few 16 year olds who know rule 13-4. Heck, I know an 11 year old who does.

 

You'd think with all the talk of how mature she is, she'd know that golf is her job, and it's her responsibility to know the rules!

 

We'll see if she changes her tune if she loses by a stroke . . . :drinks:

Not good reading material? That is a very, very poor attitude for a player making 10+ million a year. And yes, the whole "she is only 16" thing is getting tiresome :drinks: . She is a pro who is making huge money. She should know the rules. Period.

Take it easy on her...have you read the Rules of Golf lately? Not exactly light reading, nor are they very clear, and i'm an attorney who's been practicing for 10 years. Also, without having seen the moss incident in question, i would have thought that as long as i didn't touch the sand with my club, i would have been fine, and that if i had touched something on my backswing it would be OK, akin to when you hit a branch of a tree on your backstoke.

Also, without having seen the moss incident in question, i would have thought that as long as i didn't touch the sand with my club, i would have been fine, and that if i had touched something on my backswing it would be OK, akin to when you hit a branch of a tree on your backstoke.

 

If she wasn't clear mabye she should have called over an official? You see it all the time on tour, there is simply too much at stake to make assumptions.
