Outside-In, Lesson

Recommended Posts

got some questions
I went in to GG for a free lesson today. The pro told me i come just slightly outside to in, wich causes my fade in my woods. We got on the computer and looked at my swing and compared it to a tour pro. He showed me a drill wear I have a shaft parallel but outside my target line and I swing halfway back and try to keep the butt of the shaft facing the line made my the shaft thats parallel to my target line thru my swing. Anyone else use this drill? Any better drills? I was really impressed by how they can really break down your swing with the camera and computer. Anyone do lessons at a GG? Better to do lessons at say GG or on the course? Thanks in advance for any help.

The best drill I have ever seen for club path is very simple. Get four golf balls. Put one where you normally put it for a six iron. Put another ball above it and to the right. Put another above it and to the left.

Finally put the last ball directly below the one on the right. The object is to hit the middle ball that is set up where you would normally hit it with a six iron. If you bring the club from the outside in, you will hit the top right ball. If you bring the club too far from the inside, you will hit the one on the bottom right. If you fail to rotate your body and release the club, you will hit the one on the upper left. This drill works great. Most people will over correct when trying to fix swing path and this will help you avoid that.

I tryed themouth1's method today and it seemed to work with my 3 wood, but my driver is still a bit of a fade. I'm gonna go in for a lesson but should I go to golf galaxy or an on course lesson? Basically computer analysis (sp?) and no ball flight vs no computer and video but you get to see your ball flight. Whats better?

My drill will not work with your woods. You need to be hitting something off of the ground to get the benifit. After hit a few buckets that way, your swing path will change with all of your clubs. If you wanted to do the same thing with a driver, all of the balls would need to be teed up and that is dangerous if you happen to hit one (and you will). Good luck!!!

Funny you say that, as I was trying it with my driver i actually did tee up the outside ball along with the regular ball. But i tryed to not get the two balls tooo close becuase I figured if i hit the outside one someone down the range will not be happy. Ok, thanks will remeber to use with irons.

I make a fourinch by four inch square and then remove the bottom left ball. When you are starting out, you may want to make it a little bigger maybe 5X5. I use this drill everytime I hit balls now. I start a lot more balls on target since I started.

Does this work better than the "inside approach" training aid. I bought one at Target a couple of weeks ago, but the first time I tried it I didn't hit the foam pad at all. Yet I was still hitting fat shots.

My biggest problem with woods/driver these days is a wicked slice. Will your drill help? Thanks!

If you are not hitting the pad but are hitting the ball fat, you are probably coming down the line but very steep. I would try to pick the ball for a while using the inside approach. That will shallow out your swing a bit. On a side not, I never do drills with my driver. I always use a six iron. Using a driver makes you focus more on contact and less on swing shape which is what you should be working on.

^^Forgive this question, I should know the answer to this, but when you say "pick" the ball, is that the same thing as a "scoop" or a "sweep", meaning I'm hitting the ball on an ascending rather than descending blow? I rarely take a divot, I already am more of a scooper.

I really need lessons, but it seems like everyone is booked up except during normal business hours. Ugh. I'm starting to think I should at least try the Leadbetter interactive or something.

A little out to in isn't neccessarily a bad thing. Trust me, I fought a severe in to out move for quite a while, and when my ball striking goes south, it's usually this swing path that's rearing it's ugly head.

A little fade isn't a bad thing with the driver. Remember, it's the longest, lightest, least lofted, and largest club in the bag. It's hard to turn over. For many people, the fade's a natural shot, and one most golfers rely on under pressure.

As long as you're not slicing the ball 60 yards right of target, you can play it all day.
