West of Dublin (ireland) golf ???

Newlands GC or Hibernian GC at CityWest ?

Hello Dublin (Ireland) area golfers!!!

I need your help please.

I will soon be staying at a hotel in the west part of Dublin.

It looks like it is located right across the street from Newlands GC.

I will spending time not too far away at the CityWest conference centre.

It seems to include 36 holes of golf ; called Hibernian GC.

So ... what do you local folks recommend: should I tee it up at Newlands or Hibernian?

Any other golf courses in the area (say within 10 miles or so) that I should consider instead?

My flight for Ireland leaves soon: look forward to your input.

Umm..please do not bother with either of those courses...with so much better to choose from.

You are a short distance from Carton House which has 36 of the finest holes in the country. Portmarnock is Irish Links. Even Royal Dublin is there. While the K Club is not the best in the world, IT IS the K Club.

Its not that far to play Baltray or The Island which are both great links. Same for the European Club or Druids Glen & Druids Heath.

Some other alternatives...Roganstown, St Margarets and Knightsbrook.

Laytown & Bettystown is a tough course and fun to play.

Agreed - and thank you - the trick is - no car. There is a certain attraction to waking up and walking across the street to play golf while the rest of the family is at a conference.

Yes...they are average courses for the area. So it just comes to what you value...very good course or walking to the course?


Heck...you can catch a cheap bus to Carton House. The Bus drops you off right at the front entrance.

go to carton you will not be disappointed i live a 20min walk from the place and play it very regularly. both courses are fantastic tracks especially the Monty.

if you are stuck that you cannot travel at all Newlands is not the worst course in the world, although is a little old fashioned, in thats its a old style parkland. hibernan is a waste of time, don't even look at the place! palmerstown house is close and is also pretty ok and great deals can be had. K club is class but very overpriced in general

Marc: thanks for the tip about Palmerston house; it looks good on the 'net. Their website says that Christy O'Connor designed both Palmerston House as well as the two courses at CityWest (aka Hibernian). What went wrong at Hibernian?

hibernan aka city west is a par 70 course that basically laps a main road.... its got chopped down over the years. The same guy (although he is now bankrupt) owned both palmerstown and citywest. city west is more like a corporate course if that makes sense whereas palmerstown was supposed to be a K club equilavant.

Marc: thanks again. that is very valuable and useful information. I have been on this site frequently for several years now and I am always pleasantly surprised just how great it is! GolfWrx is awesome.

The weather forecast for Dublin this week looks like ideal golfing weather.
