GC3 Data - Help me understand!

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I've been trying to figure something out but I can't seem to find answer or how to correct the issue. I have been doing some indoor range sessions on my GC3 and working on some things with the driver. My numbers look something like this:

  • Ball speed 172-177 MPH
  • Club head speed 121-124 MPH
  • Spin 2300-2700
  • Launch angle +3.5 / +3.9

However, my smash is consistently showing 1.39 - 1.41. Even when I absolutely pure it on the face, I can't get it higher than 1.42. Is there something I'm missing? Also curious if it could be a club issue if I'm not able to get my smash up.

Interested to hear thoughts. Thanks!

First, I'm guessing you mean Angle of Attack and not launch angle, as a low single digit launch angle wouldn't go anywhere, really.

Also, smash factor is just ball speed/clubhead speed, and 177/124 = 1.42. If you're doing one-dot mode, I'd ask where your one dot is placed. It should be high on the center of the face.

If that's where the dot is… then… you're seemingly mis-hitting it a little bit. At 124 MPH clubhead speed, you should be breaking through the 180 MPH ball speed barrier as even 1.46 is > 180 (and at 121, 1.49 gets you to 180).

Foresight measures club speed right before impact whereas Trackman measures club speed at full compression when the club speed starts to slow down.   Two different ways to measure club speed but since Foresight reads before impact the club speed will be higher resulting in lower smash factors.  You can move the dot towards the heel that will measure lower club speeds and higher smash factors.

Haha, yes. I was cruising through the post and you're right. I was referring to AoA!

The dot is placed exactly where you have it showing. I'm using a Ping 9* LST on the small (-) with an AVX ball. But no matter how well I hit it, I can't seem to get ball speed over 180 or smash over 1.41. I'm a fairly long hitter and good player who's somewhat competitive still in my 30's(although I'm getting older faster).

So is one preferred over the other? If I want the most accurate results, should I get on Trackman? I have access to a Trackman bay, but I have a GC3 that I use for indoor work and playing sim golf on GSPro.

I'm just curious what would be the best solution, and which one will help me truly understand how I compare to my handicap level and pros.

I don't think one if preferred over the other, just different methods of measurement and algorithms. You're hitting the ball very well, switch to Prov1-x left dash and I bet you break 180 ball speed everything else equal.

Are you expecting better ball speed numbers?  Or are you just confused since the smash is so low?  Sounds like you're used to getting north of 180.  I would test another driver on your GC3.  Or, get on that trackman bay and do a toe to toe with something else just to see if there may be an issue with your Ping?

Yeah, I would say both. I thought my ball speeds would be higher, but also confused by smash being so low.

If your driver has an issue, it could be the answer to both of those.  It could be that the unit is misreading club speed and inflating it for some reason.  If you are indeed centering it, you should get better smash than that.  Either way, I think hitting another driver on it would be the best move.  See if it only happens on the Ping.

You rarely will see a smash above 1.43 maybe up to 1.45-1.46 if you mega compress one on GC at north of 130chs. Smash factor numbers are all relative to what monitor you are using. A GC 1.43-1.44 is like a trackman 1.48-1.49. I use trackman all the time and occasionally ill get 1.50 usually a lot of 1.48-1.49 on flush shots with RCT.

Left dash maybe will move the needle on ballspeed. Adjusting your # to trackman its probably like 117-120chs 1.46-1.47 smash. They measure the club differenty. You may be hitting it more heel or toe than you realize. Would check impact location or ball. 2300-2700 if at the upper end (2700) is trending towards being high spin imo so id expect less efficient energy transfer hence the lower smash (relative to the gc3 being used).

I've confirmed club head speed on Trackman is between 119-122, but that all makes sense. I just didn't know if I was misunderstanding the readings or if something was off.

Yeah if you're seeing 119-122chs on  trackman then its a strike location or the setup you are in isn't optimal

Generating the speed you have I'm guessing you can tell either by feel or seeing wacky ball speed, spin, and launch angles that you mis-hit the ball.  On the quad I can see my impact locations so I don't even pay attention to the smash factor anymore.

I’m not totally sure about that. I use mine and consistently see around 1.48-1.49
