Toe Hits

I just got a nice set of ping g2 black dots. I noticed a lot of toe hits in the first couple of rounds. Is it possible that I need them more upright (lie)? I did the on line fitting at Ping and it showed I need red or orange dots (flat). I am confused. Thanks in advance for the advice.

I don't believe that toe hits necessarily equate to a lie angle problem, you may just need some time to get used to your new irons or a swing flaw has crept into your game. I think a better indication of a mis-fit lie angle would be your ballflight and divots if you take them. Aside from the harsh feel and loss of distance from a toe hit are your shots straying farther left or right from the target than is normal for you? For a right handed golfer a lie angle that is too flat will likely result in shots going right and an overly upright lie angle will send more shots left of the target.

I was having a lot of toe hits lately because of an over the top move. I've been addressing the ball towards the heel forcing me to come more from the inside...otherwise I will $hank it. Since then, I have been hitting all my irons pure. After a while, you can gradually address the ball more and more towards the center.

Good post.

Over the top was my worse problem, especially with driver. Moving the ball back and taking shorter swings helped me get over this as well.

If you've been fitted properly for lie, and the clubs are on-spec, then it's likely a swing-flaw. However, it may be related to grip-size. The severe toe-miss is usually an OTT move, but of a specific kind - it is sometimes a cast from the top, but more usually it's the right hand getting too involved just prior to impact, and pushing the clubhead to the left too quickly. If this is the case, then it can often be helped with a slightly larger grip, which allows the left hand to do its job.
