Summer before last, I took my family down to Raleigh, NC and the Southern Pines/Pinehurst area and played about 4-5 courses....one of the most memorable was Tobacco Road (Sanford, NC....right off of Rt. 1, about 48 miles SW of Raleigh). It was long, but had 5-6 different tee boxes for each person's typical length. It was listed as very hard, I think the slope rating was 156, but even my wife liked it. It was plush, had a lot of blind tee shots, but very forgiving landing areas. I remember the guy sending you off of #1 said "just hit over that hill with the stove pipe....just aim at the stove pipe", lol. And sure enough, you drive your ball over the hill top/chimney pipe and find that there's a large landing area on the other side. Also had one blind green with a 12-foot high flag, otherwise you wouldn't see a normal flag from the fairway, perched up on a hill with mounds in front, lol. As funky as this all sounds, it was so much fun all of us (my son on a college golf team, myself, and my wife all wished we played there again that trip....have it down on my list of area courses to play). It's pretty cool too...some large 'waste areas' look like sandtraps, but you can drive the cart in them....some go along the entire fairway all the way to the green....hopefully you're not in them for the entire length :-) . I was all set on the trip and then talked to the golf agent at Tobacco Road...she had great prices on packages and I ended up cancelling my own hotel reservation and took one through her (booked golf + hotel) whereby she essentially got me free hotel compared to what I was about to pay (Marriott Inn & Suites?...had a kitchenette in each unit) and lower golf rates than I thought I could get, and not just at their place (Tobacco Road), but others as well... Mid-South GC, Mid-Pines GC.

We also played the Duke Univ. course....very nice. UNC's course looked nice too and NC-State's hadn't opened yet, but having gone there, I would have played that one.

Another course I played when I went to school down there that always reminded me of Augusta (had a lot of azealeas all over the tee box areas), was Keith Hills GC (about 45 min from Raleigh...in Bouies Creek?....I think that was Campbell Univ's home course). Don't know what it's like recently.

Oh yea, there's one course down there in Southern Pines, NC, that you can use Llamas as caddies...!!! I was wanting to do that just to say I did, but didn't want to ruin a golf day if I couldn't control it, lol. I guess you bring some munchies to keep them in check? Last thing I'd want is to finish putting and find the thing running down the fairway with my clubs and having to catch it, lol.

Making my first trip to North Carolina and I am looking to play a round in the Raleigh or Clemmons areas. All suggestions would be really appreciated.

Thanks
