The 1 Thing You Hate About Your Favourite OEM

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Been a while since I've started a thread. I'd love to hear your thoughts. Here's mine.

I'm a Ping aficionado, and I mostly use their gear. I have a soft spot because I grew up in Phoenix.

The 1 Thing that I really, really do not like is their adapter for their woods, because it turns the grip and shaft on every adjustment. It's awful because I can't use an Align grip, and thus I've stopped using their driver. I know, I could choose to never adjust, but that's not the point. Others don't have this problem, and I wish they'd sort it out.

What's your 1 Thing you hate (or really, really not like) about your favourite OEM?

Last I checked, they all do that.  I know my Mizuno, Bridgestone and Srixon do.

Callaway does not, titleist will stay in the starting position IF your setting starts with A. You can cycle through 1-4 no problem.

its one of the reasons I like callaway woods so much.

For actual adjustability, Titleist has the best system, adjusting loft and lie separately.

As for why I dislike most about an OEM, I don’t have a favorite but here’s a couple things I don’t like:

Callaway - any of their MB’s since the 2018 model, and that they went away from the x forged model that same year. Also that they have a ton of “tour only” models that I’m sure would benefit a lot of people.

every other brand - agree with the OP on the driver adjustability

taylormade - nothing I like about that brand

The sole wear on the Titleist T iron line.  They look like I've dragged them on concrete after just 20 rounds of play.

I have a lot of brands I like and respect, but gotta say as a player of Cally woods for years now, their headcover game has deteriorated as prices have gone up.

Not just bad looking (subjective), HC quality is utter crap. Even the older Customs San Diego HC's which were better leather (or leather like objects) don't stand the test of time for a $50+ product.

This is a more recent thing but its gone on for several cycles and i will never understand it.

Vokey K grind is described as the "ultimate bunker grind" but it's not available in a sand wedge.  For years I've wanted a 54 K and a 58 M which would solve so many issues, instead im forced to play more bounce in my lob wedge than my sand wedge if I want the help out of the K.  Of course, I could just get better out of the bunker with practice but thats not the point here...

I hate that PING has gone from having irons that were designed and finished in a utilitarian that didn’t seem to wear.  I went from being a PING only guy to using any number of brands.  I had a set of Zing2 irons that I used for years and they always looked awesome.   I also don’t care that they moved away from being able to order older models.  I’d pay a fair amount of money for a set of Zing2 irons 4-sw with current groove standards and original lofts.

Your jealousy is showing but we don't have to talk about it.

Nah. Why would I be jealous of people I think are utter halfwits? I see a lot of people saying things like that when ‘influencers’ get criticised, but I don’t get it 🤷🏻‍♂️

As I said, I’m old, also British. I just don’t get all the shouting and whooping and over-reacting to a half-decent shot. It doesn’t align with the previous image of my previously favourite brand.

Titleist.  Their clubs are made for good ball strikers; they don't have enough "easy to hit" clubs for older guys - Ping do a better job in this segment.

As the successors to the TSR1 clubs evolve, perhaps Titleist will become that player.

Price

Golf clubs are expensive, but buying habits have changed as well where people believe they need the latest and greatest.  People spend a lot of money for marginal gains and marketing.  The PING SI3 driver was released in ‘03 for $399 dollars.  I’m not calling you out specifically, but just mentioning that people spend a lot of money for something that may not help their scores at all. If you spend $1000 or so for a set of irons and keep them for five plus years it’s not so bad.

Agreed on this. I bent my 58K to 56 because I wanted the benefit of a high bounce, easy to get out of the bunker sand wedge without messing up my gapping. Doing that allowed me to play a 60T for the low bounce lob wedge. But I'd really rather a 56K.

Don't have a clear cut favorite so here are my takes on the few I like the most

Titleist: Lackluster driver performance

TaylorMade: Paint chips on the putters make them look horrible quickly

Callaway: Hot faced irons have gone way too far, dispersion distance wise is awful on all non-MB offerings, ruining otherwise great odyssey putters by using cheap inserts

Ping: the worst feeling irons on the planet and worst sounding driver on the market but quality and performance is good enough to give them a pass

I like them all, so here we go…

Ping - ugly woods that look draw biased

Titleist - vokey is overrated and unforgiving for normal hacks

Callaway - don’t trust their quality for the price

Taylormade - twist face is for a niche market

I play a bunch of brands so I can't claim a favorite, but I have a strong dislike for Callaway products as I've seen WAY too many iron sets show up that aren't even close to build spec. Wrong lengths, swing weight variety packs, loft and lie issues seem to be present in much higher numbers than other manufacturers.
