North Atlanta greens

Does anybody have input about the condition of greens in the north Atlanta area? Planning on a detour after meetings on 9-2 but not at Barnsley this time. Looking at Bear's Best, Manor, Legacy on Lanier, or another course with little traffic. I wasn't happy with Bear's best condition in the spring but a buddy remembers what it was like a few years ago when he played it last.

There are a few things to consider.

Bermuda greens will be in good shape but bent grass greens have struggled this summer since it has once again (two years in a row) been much hotter than normal here. When the nights never get below 70 degrees for weeks or even months on end, that is bad for bent grass. The bent grass greens will not be in great shape for another month or two. About 10% to 20% of North Atlanta greens are bent grass so you will have to check with each course about what they have.

It is now coming into prime time for fall greens aeration. For example, at my club, we are aerating next week. So for the next month to six weeks, you want to specifically ask about that.

So two questions ..... do you have bent grass greens, and did you recently aerate.

Most courses around here will be honest with you, if you ask.

The overall condition of fairways is pretty good right now, from what I have seen, although it continues to be a bit drier than typical. Some courses have better irrigation systems than others. Fortunately, everything around here is bermuda, or zoysia, fairways, and they love the heat. They just need enough water.

I am playing Bears Best tomorrow. Its starting to cool off and I think a lot of courses learned their lesson last year if they have bent grass.

Played Bear's Best today - a few of the greens are in rough shape and were punched a couple of weeks ago due to the extreme heat. #6 and #14 are probably the worst off, but most others are still fairly good. That course has done a better job than most keeping their bent alive. Of the courses you mentioned, the best bet for conditions is Legacy on Lanier. They have bermuda greens and I believe get less play than others as they're a bit pricey.

5 or 6 greens were really bad, basically dead. Other than that, they are slow nd soft.

The Manor greens are in great shape for Labor Day weekend. But Tuesday and Wednesday (Sept. 6th and 7th) they are doing the large tine aerification and will need a couple weeks to heal before they are back in the great shape they have been.
