First Golf Lesson in Years - Video Recap....thoughts?

Hello, Gents!

Just took my first lessons from a local golf pro. As part of his fees, he makes a lesson-recap video for every lesson you take. In the beginning, you can EASILY see how much better my form looks. My shots were awful with the proper stance, but it's just something I need to get used to and practice with. Definitely felt more fluid, though.

Just thought I would post up and see if y'all had any additional comments/thoughts? This is my first post on WRX, and am just getting back into the swing of things (good pun, eh?) after not playing regularly for 5-7 years.

Awesome that he makes a recap video to remember what you did wrong. And it seems slot of people have problems with weak grips. My fairway and short game have been decent and kept me in the high 80's but now that I can use my driver efficiently I am shooting low 80's now!

Even Aaron Rodgers has a weak grip:p

Yea, I never knew that a strong grip would make that much difference. It seems backwards, because with a "strong" grip, I feel Im holding my club with less pressure, therefore it FEELS less controlled, but it works MUCH better. Went out today after hitting the range and shot a 98! First time Ive ever been under 100. Soooo happy!

That lesson recap is a nice touch. Its funny, your video and what you are currently working on was pretty much word for word what I have been working on with my pro. You are right, you will hit a ton of squirrelly shots until the right way gets ingrained, and patience will be tested, but its worth it when you get it right. When on the range dont get focused on where the ball goes, cuz that will cause you to creep back to old habits. Congrats on breaking 100.

Went to the range last night and really focused on slowing down my entire swing to make sure everything is working correctly. Man, it's HARD to slow your swing down! Haha. Anyways, after some putrid shots (hooked instead of sliced), I was finally able to slow everything down, and get it all to click. I reduced my distances by about 30-50% until I was hitting them "playable" consistantly. Once that happened, I dialed my swing back up a few notches and couldn't believe the results!!!

So far, I think the most important item of my swing to change is my grip. I never would have thought changing something so simple could lead to such drastic results. The grip, coupled with a more athletic stance has given me outstanding results thus far. Can't wait to continue!

Its a great lesson and the video recap is great. It took me over 2000 balls to get used to the strong grip.
It drove me nuts at the start and then it just clicked and my ball striking is wonderful now.

A couple of things they told me was to hold the release point unti it was on the inside of your left inner thigh
and your weight should be shifted to the left foot by the time your were at the bottom of your downswing.
Those last two points helped the strong grip work for me...

Im not 100% sure I agree about his thoughts on my shoulder angle. What do you guys think?

Im STILL slicing my driver very very bad. Almost a snap-slice. Starts out straight, and then goes immediately right. Very frustrating.

Just some advice with lessons. You either trust the one you are working with or not. Asking advice on an internet forum will just confuse you in the end.

I do like the way he does the videos though....

Although I disagree with some of the points that he made,he has hit upon three major errors that you are making,Your bend to the ball ,your upper body leaning to the target at the top and your lower body being out of synch with your upper body on your downswing.I could not see your grip ,but generally I am in favor of a strong grip..Notice also that Aaron Baddeley maintains much of the flex in his right knee from the setup to the top of the backswing.You would also benefit from doing this.Try this simple drill to help your backswing.Place a mirror in front of you to see your position at the top.Take a good setup.Place your hands on opposite shoulders.Then just turn your shoulders until they are line with your right foot.Your weight should look like it is loaded into your right foot as Aaron does and you back should be sightly angled away from your target at the top ,just as Aaron is.doing.I have feeling that your upper body and lower body will be more in synch on the downswing when you get into a better position at the top but try this simple drill.Hit balls with a nerf football or a small beach ball between your elbows.
The last thing is that you might benefit from hitting a number of shorter shots, 9-3 length, and and not mainly just full swings.
