Fitting Review and My New Clubs!

I am very excited to share pics of my brand new clubs and commend a job well done by the guys over at The Golf Fix in irvine, ca.

 

To give you a little background about myself. I'm 35 years old and been playing for 1.5 years. I have worked my way to a 13.9 handicap and recently won my club championship (net). My short game is pretty solid but I can't break 80 unless I pitch and putt my butt off. That's why its so critical for me to gain that extra 10-15 yards with my drives and irons so I can get on the green more often. After a year of experimenting and spending stupid money with different shafts and clubs via purchases from ebay and the local golf superstore , I finally decided to remove all doubts and seek help from a professional LOL.

 

So I did some research and decided to give The Golf Fix a shot. It is the only fitting company that is closest to me and uses trackman on an outdoor grass range. I do not like indoor fittings...I like to watch the ball flight. Long story short, having the guys at Golf Fix fit and make my clubs was the best decision I could make at this juncture of my golf development. I need that extra distance to reach single handicap consistently.

 

My fitting started with a bag evaluation. I discovered that the actual flexes on my shafts are all over the place. I mean the range was from women's flex to a hard stiff. He also suggested I try some more forgiving clubs, which I kinda knew but didn't want to admit.

 

On to the fitting range...I hit a few with my nike vr pro combos to get a baseline. My nike 6 iron went 145 yards or so but was as short as 130-135 on decent misses. I then tried all kinds of shafts and club heads, including some graphite shafts for irons. I had the best results with callaway diablo forged with nippon shafts. I was easily gaining 10 more yards and not losing much when I miss. I then got fitted for a driver that I can actually turn over without having to think about turning it over during my swing LOL. A Ping rapture v 2 with oban devotion shaft. I was consistently hitting 230-250, even on the misses, versus my titleist where its 240 when I kill it and 210 when I miss.Then I got fitted for hybrids that I can swing aggressively with since the flexes were at women/senior flexes. This is great for me because I can now attack the ball with the same aggression! No more grandma swings with my hybrids and he-man swings with my driver! At the very least, a lot of doubts about my equipment have been removed so I can work on my game without all the head games I tend to get into with myself. Below is a breakdown of my old clubs and the clubs that the guys at the Club Fix made for me! All with accurate flexes of course..

 

OLD CLUBS

Driver: Titleist 910 d2 with Oban revenge 6 - 4 flex, 65 grams.

Actual flex as tested by Club fix : 7.1

3 Wood: Titleist 910 with (can't remember since I didn't get that shaft back).

Actual Flex 6.2

3 Hybrid: Cobra Baffler TWS, the stock shaft, Regular Flex, tipped ½ inch

Actual Flex: 2.7!

4 Hybrid: Cobra Baffler TWS, the stock shaft, Regular Flex, tipped ½ inch

Actual Flex: 3.2!

P-5 Iron: Nike VR Pro Combo with True Temper Dynamic R300.

Actual Flexes: 4.1 - 4.3 (actually sorta consistent there throughout the set)

Gap Wedge: nike victory red forged. don't remember which shaft, but I did spend money so it would sorta match the flex on my vokeys

Actual Flex: 5.0

Sand: titleist vokey, just the off the shelf wedge flex

Actual flex: 5.5

64 degree: titleist vokey, just off the shelf wedge flex

Actual flex 5.0

 

MY NEW CLUBS!

Blue Ferrules and Grips on the drivers and hybrids and lime green ferrules and grips on my irons!

 

Driver: Ping Rapture v2, oban devotion 03 55. Flex 5.5 (i stayed with my titleist head cover because I like how the sleeve extends into the bag, providing more protection)

3 Wood: Reshaft Titleist 910F, oban devotion 3 55. Flex 5.3

3 and 4 hybrid: Reshaft Cobra baffler tws, oban devotion Hybrid shaft. Flex 5.1

P-5 Irons: Callaway Diablo Forged, Nippon 1100. Flex 5.0

Gap/Sand/64: Reshaft, nippon 1100. Flex 5.0

 

I will need to play some rounds and let you guys know how these clubs perform on the course, but am experiencing the same distance increases at my local driving range!

Great review and thank you for sharing these pics. I went and saw the guys at The Club Fix too. I must say my clubs aren't as good looking with all the colors, but the work done on them was just as nice. Wait until you get these on the course. I've seen distance and accuracy increases.

Handicap has gone from a 8 to a 6 already after a short time.

I'm always interested in what it costs for full bag fittings. What did you pay for the fitting? I'm thinking I have a lot of the same issues you do with regard to differing flexes.

Those lime green grips are sweet.

I believe the fitting is like around 275-300 bucks. I bought so much stuff, they may have waved it for me.
its worth it just for peace of mind lol

An update. I finally had a chance to play 3/4 of a round( twilight ) and I am amazed at the increase in distance with all my clubs without losing accuracy. I was playing at my home course so I know where the ball usually lands with my old clubs. I've gained at least 20 yards on my drives and 10 with my irons. I tied my front 9 low using these clubs for the first time so I am pretty excited. Very impressed with club fix's result so far. One thing tho is that I had my wedges reshafted as well. I still need to get use to them as the distances and feel are different. I may go back to my old shafts because I am more worried about feel vs. distance.

thanks. yeah i actually just ordered the diablo gap wedge so the distances are more evenly spaced througout the set...actually after playing with the nippon powered wedges, I found that I am losing a bit of feel around the greens. I am going to play with it some more then decide on what to do next with zach, the fitter who's been very helpful. will let u guys know what the deal is with that after a few more rounds.

Great post and glad to hear you have noticed such an instant improvement.

I would love to do this one day, basically no expense spared head to toe full set fitting. Bit tough to do here as we dont even have a golf shop, but one day!!!!!!!

Can't beat an excellent fitting. Thanks for the review and good luck. My fitter had me go w 10 gram heavier shafts in my wedges w the same flex - Nippon 1050 in the wedges vs 950 in the irons.

I forgot to add how much I like the Oban's with the matching grips, that looks sick. I'm the same age as you and started playing in '09. Before then I played maybe 4 rounds of golf in my entire life! Well, I'm hooked now and my handicap is not as low as yours but I'm working on it. I have actually improved with my new irons (mp-63) compared to my old chunky GI irons (mx-200).

So this is one of those deals where he sells you a new set of Callaway irons, pulls the shafts and puts something different in there along with the Dayglo ferrules? Something like $1,500 for the irons and maybe $2,000 for that plus the driver and all the reshafts?
