Putter Fitting?

Recommended Posts

Did it make a big difference?
I had a quick alignment check in a golf store the other day and was amazed at how much my aim was off at times. It got me thinking about getting truly fit for a putter...especially considering I just found a great match for me in a driver. My irons and driver are fit to me, but I have never had my wedges or putter fit and that's where my score is.

Any experiences are welcomed.

A putter fitting is just as important as having all clubs and a ball fit to you. Do you know your shoe size? If you do, how did you find out?

It is the #1 Club In Your Bag....

If in doubt start with the putter and putting then work back to the tee. Your game has nowhere to go but lower ..

my 2 cents

try these at different times of day and multiple days

start with a static Ping chart
odyssey has a good website about gated stroke or strait
I did a $20 golf Galaxy fitting best $$ I've ever spent
(Apple 4 iphone PING app) no experience
SAM putter (I want for Christmas, only problem nobody very close to North Seattle)

To PuttingDoctor or anyone else, concerning putter fitting. So I have acquired lots of different putters, center shafted, heel shafted, toe hang, face balanced, etc. Primarily, I have a couple of Seemores, couple of Rifes, couple of Camerons, and a couple of Clevelands. I recently came across a mint Cleveland T-Frame mallet for like $35. This is a $99 retail putter, that likely performs like a $200-$300 putter, so I bought it.

The T-Frame mallet is a high MOI mallet putter, clearly targeted towards higher handicappers or people really looking for extreme putter forgiveness. But this is face balanced putter, which favors a SBST stroke. Per iPing, I have a slight arc stroke, occasionally a strong arc stroke, and rarely a straight stroke. And anecdotally, it seems that many more of us have at least a slight arc to our stroke, as opposed to a SBST stroke. So my primary question is, how do you reconcile a high MOI mallet putter, which is often totally or mostly face balanced, with the fact that many of its target users will not have the SBST stroke that a face balanced putter favors?

Real-world wise, I really enjoyed the T-Frame in my round yesterday. Very nice putter. Hope my question makes sense--thank you in advance for any responses.

I have typically used mallets over the years with either a right-hand low(LH) and recently a claw grip that was real successful for a good run. I mixed it a few months back with a Odyssey #9 and I've had mediocre results.

I was in a store the other day and met a rep with a company named Aneening Golf and we did a few alignment test with a laser using different putters and it was interesting to notice the difference in setups(belly, mallet, blade) and how each would produce a different alignment to the taarget...some better than others. They offer an entire fitting through their lab with different putters and analysis. The putters are priced somewhat higher than I was expecting, but if you include the total fitting it's not that bad.

I'm just trying to justify the cost, or could I get a good idea of just getting the Ping iApp and get the same results?

i had a putter fitting... shocked to see my trusty Scotty was consistently aimed 2 balls right of target, was too toe heavy causing me to hit the ball with an open face AND need to be 2 degrees flatter!!!

i got a center weighted putter, with a sight line, bent to my specs and BAM... almost an immediate improvement... literally i have a buddy that i golf with all the time and we always talk trash and even said that he has never seen me putt as well as i am now. Best decision i ever made.

Jeff / Lefty74 this goes for you too.

You can't keep putting yourself in a box based upon what you have heard or read re putter balance and stroke type. You can stroke any putter you care to. Some will help rotation and some will hinder it. But it's how you stroke the putter that is the heart of good putting.

Now don't take this the wrong way I like PING as a company. That said you need to know that with the iPing putting app you get what you pay for. Let me say this one more time if you havn't heard me say it before.

THE PING APP KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT PATH, ONLY ROTATION!!! Please know that you can have a fanning motion on a SBST type stroke and iPing will call it Strong Arc. .... so get fit. See a fitter who like an Edel fitter will find for you the configuration you aim best with. Aim is the foundation.

Then find someone if not the Edel fitter who can give you an honest putting lesson or two.

Many will tell you it's the best money they've spent on their game.
