Part of a family trip

My wife and I are planning on a family trip next year in June/July where we are going to take of 3 kids to Williamburg VA. During the trip I plan on getting a couple of rounds in and am looking for some advice on good and fun courses close to the Williamsburg area. As well I'm wondering if anyone could advise what the general green fee rates would be for the late June early July timeframe, I know these are not exact but a general idea of what is reasonable or what to expect for a rack rate.

I apprecaite any advice my fellow golfwrx'ers can offer about this area.

I have been there twice on family trips. The Golden Horseshoe is a great track and play it always when we stay at Colonial Williamsburg INN. The price is a little high, but the course is always in nice shape when I am there.

My two favorites are the Gold course at Golden Horseshoe and Royal New Kent. New Kent is tough but fun. Gold is beautiful and expensive. Both are memorable.

If you can go before June I'd recommend doing that as the weather can get brutally hot and humid.
As for courses, the Golf Course at Golden Horseshoe and Royal New Kent are considered the best, and you'll pay triple digits to enjoy them. A couple of under the radar courses that will cost a little less: The Colonial (old school track: narrow with smaller greens) and Colonial Heritage (definitely more modern but not as penal as New Kent).
Depending on how much golf you'll be able to play, it would probably be worth buying a Tee Time Golf Pass (google it). It costs $60, but if you play during the week, you'll get $60 off at New Kent, so it's already paid for itself.
Bonus advice: eat at the Green Leafe Tavern at least once. Good sandwiches and an awesome beer selection. If the family wants to eat in Colonial Williamsburg, the only restaurants locals will eat at are Blue Talon and Fat Canary (or the Cheese Shop for lunch). The others are massive tourist traps.
