Golf near Mohegan Sun, CT - summer '07

I'm planning a bachelor party for my best friend who's getting married end of next August. Early stages of planning a weekend @ Mohegan Sun. Haven't set a specific weekend yet, but it will be June, July, or early August.

Never been, and there doesn't seem to be any courses at the resort. I would love any and all suggestions on courses located close to the resort, as we'd like to play twice while we're there. I'm sure there have to be a few nice courses nearby.

Thanks in advance for any ideas . . . Golf will probably be the only sober thing we do all weekend, so I'd like to have it planned thoroughly ahead of time.

Lake of Isle....AWESOME course. I believe it is run my Foxvegas (Foxwoods) but they are not too far apart.

Just curious; have you stayed at Foxwoods? I'm not totally set on Mohegan, I just hear good things about it.

For a "non-Vegas" venue, Mohegan is probably ahead of Foxwoods in overall distractions. The Sun has a much larger area with fights, basketball, concerts just a little bit better.

I haven't make it out to Lake-of-Isles yet, but everyone I know who played it - loved it - except it is expensive.

If you want something cheaper and interesting, there is a Donald Ross course in Groton with reasonable green fees. Shinnecosset.

Lake of Isles is one of the best conditioned courses in Connecticut by far. I played it back in May and it was in fantastic shape. The land is so unique that it doesn't even feel like you are in CT. There are some funky holes with long carries to the fairway depending on which tees you play from. If you don't mind spending $150+, this is a great option.

I agree with the Shennecossett recommendation if you don't want to spend a lot of money. Fun golf course with great views of the Thames River and the Long Island Sound on 15-17, the new holes on the back nine.

Mohegan Sun is in the process of acquiring a golf course, Pautipaug Country Club in Baltic, but it's stalling because the casino is concerned about the lack of water for the course. Who knows, it might be casino property by the time you want to play.

Find the town of Groton's website online, print off discount coupons. We paid $20 WITH CART back in late August. It is a GREAT and OLD golf course and you can check out the course pics here:

I agree with the above posts. Play Lake Of Isles if guys are willing to pay that much. You can't go wrong with Shenney though. It's a fantastic older style course. One of my favorites I've ever played. 15-17 is a great stretch of holes with 16 being one of my favorite holes ever.
