Craft beer Drinkers Unite!

I'm hoping all the stars align for tomorrows big experiment. I have a bottle of Serenity from Wicked Weed, which received the first 100 point rating from Draft magazine. It's a full brett beer, so it should be interesting. Also have a bottle of 2008 120minute from Dogfish. I opened another last year and it was still drinkable, and more like a barely wine than the BIG IPA it was fresh. Lastly, I have a 1997 bottle of Sam Adams Triple Bock. Not sure if this will still be good, but if it is, will be a nice cap on the other two!!

So, finally got a chance to sit down with these along with a brewer buddy. The Wicked Weed is nice, but calling it a 100pt beer might be pushing it. Since it's 100% bret yeast, it should age well, so I have 2 that are going on the shelf for some years to come...

The 2008 120 minute hadn't soured, which was great. Started with some molasses flavor, and had some hoppiness left, but not as much as some IPA's today. More of a barely wine than IPA but still very balanced for a brew with 20% or so.

I had a bottle of 2007 Thomas Hardy Ale too. A British barley wine, which after tasting this, just shows how much the 120 is more like a barley wine than a big IPA. Very smooth and well worth opening. I can see why these are sought after.

The last one was a 1997 Sam Adams Triple Bock. I was concerned about this one. It's 17 years old, but I've heard from several people recently that theirs turned to vinegar. We lucked out!!!!!! Absolutely amazing. Started with a black molasses flavor, that turned to dark chocolate, that morphed into pomegranate. Smooth, very little alcohol presence, and balanced thru and thru. If you have an opportunity to try one of these, do it. It's not for everyone, but definitely worth the try.

Yesterday, tried another cockeyed cooper bourbon barrel barley wine, disappointed in this one yet again. Pretty much no hint of the barrel.

So I tried a 2013 olde bluehair barley wine, not a fan! I'm becoming too picky, and I'm not willing to pay $15 and up for a beer, so I might just take a break and go back to rye cocktails for the time being.

Mark I think you and I have blown through so many different beers in the last 6 months its time to just stick to the old favorites with something new sprinkled in every so often. Then when the really good seasonals come out just stockpile them hahha

My wife scored me a cool package from Arizona Wilderness brewing, it's got a keychain carved out of an old whiskey barrel, stickers, a cool patch, and best of all, AZ wilderness beard balm that includes hops in its recipe. The beard balm is awesome, I've got about 3 or 4 months of growth going on and it does an awesome job of taming the beast haha.

If youre in the ct area pallet mallet from backeast brewery and ghandi bot from new england brewery are delicious. Sea Hag is another favorite from new england brewery thats a little more accessible than the previous 2. Can we get a beer trading system goin on here? Or is that against the rules?

The brewery right down the road from me, Two Roads, makes some decent, not great beer. I just learned that they are contract brewing Lawsons Finest Sip of Sunshine, and then shipping it back to VT. Talk about the ultimate beer tease! My buddy and i were joking of a plan to break in and steal the kegs.

Ok, I guess I should update this post where i was bitching. As of right before Christmas, Lawson's is distributing SOS to CT. I've picked up 2 four packs so far and, while pricey, it's fantastic.

Wow I didnt know about the two roads contract for SoS. More and more barrels have been making their way into the state. Eli's and J.Timothys gets them occasionally. I dont blame you for even contemplating breaking into two roads haha. Enjoy!

If a WRX beer trade isn't feasible there is a online store that ships beer! Members can order beers that they maybe cant get otherwise. Not all states allow this and they can only ship to the following states.

Alabama*, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Tenessee, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming.

I guess Sean Lawson comes down to Two Roads once a month to brew SOS. Most places are out of the first shipment of SOS. There are a few bars that still have it on tap. The next drop of it should be in the next one or two weeks.

The crap going on with the Gandhi-Bot name and artwork is just plain stupid. Those guys don't deserve to be put through this media scrutiny.

Thanks circle for the website. Pretty good stuff there.

I agree swat with the Gandhi-Bot scrutiny. Theyre even getting threats. Just grabbed some last night. I gotta get down to the brewery and get some growlers.

Hey Puppet, how does the Imperial Stout compare to the Breakfast Stout? Looking to pick up some stuff this weekend to keep warm this winter.
I like the Imperial better, can't really describe it. Maybe because it's less bitter and more malty. I usually love the coffee/chocolatey stouts, and like I posted earlier in the thread, the Breakfast is good; a solid option, I just tend to like others better. If I had to, I'd be perfectly happy with the Breakfast stout. The biggest to me about Founders' stouts and dark beers in general is how smooth and flavored they are.

My go-to beers are Bells hopslam and dark horse double crooked tree. Both are Michigan beers. When I'm out west I usually go with something from Deschutes or Russian River

One of your "Go To" beers is available once a year for a week......hardly a "go to" unless you only drink beer during the second half of the first month of the year.
