Iron shaft choice for Senior golfer

Hi - I play on a regular basis with a senior golfer (athletic 75yr old) who is a decent ball striker & plays off 14hcap - After watching him struggle to hit his R11 driver, I eventually got him to see the fitter I went to & he changed the shaft from the stock Blur (insert expletive here!) to a Prolaunch (Epic I think but I know the Reg shaft plays Firm) - He hits this really well with an average driver ss of 82mph - During his fitting he didn't get any figures for his irons so I don't know his 6iron swingspeed, but he would now like to either reshaft his existing irons (Clevelands that look like hybrids right thru the set) or, more likely, buy a new set of irons & sell on the Clevelands

What shafts should he be looking at for his irons? - I know he should really get fitted for them but I don't think he will on financial grounds - More likely he will find a few different club / shaft combinations to try at the local range?

He hits the Clevelands, which are graphite, poorly with little penetration or carry, so they clearly aren't a good fit for him - Should he be looking at better graphite shafts or a lighter steel shaft (he uses a few wedges with standard wedge shafts in them & hits them pretty solid?)

Any recommendations greatly appreciated

Affordable: Ping G-5 w/ senior shaft=great head and shaft for his swing speed.

If he is hitting his wedges with steel shafts well he may need that higher total weight in his other clubs. Another factor could be length of the club. Most graphite shafted clubs will be longer than steel shafted clubs. It could be a combination of both. The only way to be sure is testing on course or into a LM.

Hi Jeff - Quite a lot has happened since I started this thread - My pal said he wanted to try some more traditional irons & mentioned Mizuno - At the time I had MP52's which he loved, so we came up with a plan to find a lighter steel shaft to go in my 52's - I had Dynalite Gold SL shats fitted & told him to try them for a month - If he liked them, he could pay me for them, if he didn't he could give them back & I would sell them - After two weeks he came up to me & paid for them! - He is so pleased with them - They have transformed his iron play - Better ball stricking / better trajectory & carry / Working the ball, which was unheard of with his game improvement set - Not much opportunity to play on the golf course due to winter here in the UK, but he is really looking forward to the Spring & a good golfing year in 2012 - I fear he may be taking money off me this season!
