How do you display your classic clubs

A silver cup hook about the size of a dime can be screwed into the wall, and the shaft can be put in at the skinny end. The club will slide down about 2 feet and stop if you get the right sized hook, and appear suspended there almost invisibly. That's a pretty cheap but reasonably elegant approach if you just want people to be able to have a good look at them..

Mine stay in a black leather mini staff bag with fluffy head covers. I had some displayed in a MacGregor wall display for a few years and I could count on one finger the number of people that were in my house that would really appreciate looking at persimmon woods besides me. Its amazing how even good golfers of age, really don't appreciate the clubs as the members of this forum do, so I display mine thru Hi Res pics for golfwrx members.. Its also funny to see good golfers stay clear of a real wood on the golf course. I've played a few rounds with some good friends, who can really hit the ball well and decline an offer to "try it". Scardie Cats.. LOL

I just moved into a new home and am finishing the basement into a man cave. Currently all my old drivers and irons are crammed into an old leather (bright orange) Powerbilt bag. I'm hoping that someone here has pics of a display rack of some sort. Thanks

Put "golf display" into the eBay search and you get a few different options that might appeal. Personally, every time I add 14 clubs to my collection, I buy a new bag! There are some really nice mint vintage ones out there for not alot.

It's wierd isn't it ? I get more appreciation for the craftsmanship of the persimmons I have from NON-golfers. And you're dead right about playing partners aversion to "trying" real woods. I've played about 20 rounds with persimmon woods since September, and out of all the people I've played with only one has asked for a go - and that was with a fairway wood, a Louisville Niblick #4 which is a fair bit bigger than a traditional pear-shaped 4-wood. He topped it left into a bunker first time, and on the second go he reckoned he hit the best fairway wood shot of his life. Many people are surprised how far a well-hit persimmon will go, but are still reticent to have a bash themselves. I think it's the small head size that intimidates them.

Blade, i'm glad I'm not the only one to experience it. Your right, the small persimmon head is just very intimating for somebody who hasn't hit one in 20 years. Recently was hitting some one night and out of the bushes before dark a good acquaintance of mine, a genuine 1 handicapper who practices at night like i do watched me hit a few. He man'd up after I offered him to hit one. I only offered because i knew he wouldn't put a dummy mark on the club. Thats a golden rule, don't ever hand one of your nice persimmons to a guy who could put a mark of shame on it. He made a good swing and the ball went flying about 165 yards 20 yards right of the fairway. He handed it back in laughter pretty quick, but he didn't make any excuses, just remarked how heavy the club was. (It also had an apex 5 shaft, ), so it was no wussy club. It takes a different swing to play them for sure. Most are glad we don't play them anymore. Hitting persimmon will never give you instant gratification, when I hit 10 shots, I know a good one third of them are gonna be ones I want to forget, but I enjoy the challenge and the gratification of hitting one close to the screws.

I display mine by pulling them out of the bag, taking off the vintage-type headcovers, twirling them in my hands a few times and setting them behind the golf ball to give it a good whack. My regular playing partner is always eager to see which of the collection I have brought out for the day--M85s, M75s, Mod. 65s, 653s, etc. in the woods, but always a set of vintage Wilson Staff blades. It's only been the past year that I've been playing real woods again, but the vintage Staff blades of one type or another have been in the bag pretty much since the late 80s. Interesting that those never elicit a comment the way the woods do.

I've had the same experience as freddie and blade when it comes to others wanting to give the woods a go--they tend to stick to their titanium, thank you. I recently gave my buddy an extra set of Wilson buttonbacks I had lying around. He'll hit them on the range, but I have yet to see them on the course.

Mine are in old vintage bags (2), and I play them occasionally when the Spring weather is favorable and a couple times throughout the year. The young guys like to try them, now and then, but my old friends just laugh and tell tales from our past. Our time is running out,and we better enjoy what's left of it. ;)

" Our time is running out,and we better enjoy what's left of it. ;) "

Teespoon's summation kind of crystallizes things for me. I have been fighting a general reluctance to play my persimmons for fear of breaking them, but it is becoming increasingly evident that we are the last generation of golfers willing and wanting to play these classics, and in some sense, the clubs deserve to be played.

To bring this back to the subject of display, I've taken a couple of brass floor lamps of the same era (1940-50), and "integrate" them with old leather golf bags.. It is a fairly simple matter to unwire and then re-wire the head of these lamps after drilling a suitably sized hole in the bottom of the bag. I have two, one on each side of the desk in my office. Removing the clubs for a day kind of solves the problem of both display and play.

So what I probably need to now re-consider is taking these sets out to play occasionally. One is a full set of Byron Nelson 563 woods and 259T irons. The other has a set of 653 EOM woods with R.T. Jones Syncro-Stroke irons (1953). I'm not sure all collectors would appreciate the Spaldings, but in the early 50s, these were still very much at the top of the food chain for players.

Someone was trying to sell that sort of lamp on UK eBay just before xmas; I thought it looked quite cool. Care to post a pic of your pair ?

Belding do a really posh (= expensive) one based on their Circa 1904 bag

Mine are in bags. I keep a look out at Goodwill whenever I'm there, garage sales, for clubs and bags. I wish I had the room to display some on walls but I keep all my clubs in a storage area. I'm in there often just looking, waiting for spring. It's going to be -37 Celcius tonight up here in Alberta. I don't want to talk any more.

dkbunk - love your display set up there .. I wish more houses in the UK had basements ! They are the exception rather than the rule here ...

nspiel58 - you have my sympathy ... I lived in Edmonton for a year in 1991/92

I think the floor lamp is a great idea. As soon as I get a vintage bag that is smaller than a staff bag, I am on it
