I've seen this video so many times I've lost count, but I never can resist watching it again (and again) when it pops up here and there on different forums.

It's a bit sad on many levels, especially when O'Meara's mental gears begin turning and the cause-and-effect relationship of bringing back persimmon begins to set in... he then begins working it out: "instead of lengthening the courses", "instead of playing souped-up golf balls", "maybe the real shot makers would come back." That all sounds good to me.

I wonder how many previously successful, tour-level pros would vanish from the leader boards if persimmon woods were brought back. I think we would be surprised by which PGA Tour pros would and wouldn't survive a hypothetical persimmon switch-back.

I really miss those days. When I played persimmon, I was reasonably long, 260-275. Now with titanium, I've got guys who have only been playing one season blowing it by me. If they had to hit persimmon, they probably couldn't keep the ball on the property. You had to be skilled to drive the ball well with persimmon. Persimmon woods and forged blades identified and showcased talent. Now if you want to drive it long and straight you open your wallet. Doesn't seem fair....

Yes, and the flight of the ball. There is nothing better than hitting a low riser into a sunset. Or a high draw with the wind to gain a few extra yards of roll.

Today I can give it all I have into a strong wind. The club and the ball saves me. With my old cleveland and a balata it would have blown back into my forehead....

The difference in ball flight makes one hell of a difference in my book.
I play at Hunstanton in the UK which is a classic top 100 links course and often get paired in the foursomes with quality golfers who carry the modern gear.
Into the wind they stuggle like hell as the new gear goes one way .......HIGH!!
With my persimmon I can't keep up length wise but into the wind I can hit a low back foot driver past their balooning modern drive. And the 1 iron beats the HIGHbrid anyday into the wind.
To me its not some "high and mighty" back to the future thing its just way more FUN.
Its supposed to be an enjoyable game after all :=)
