Ma golfer23's swing - advice needed

Recommended Posts

scratch golfer trying to get into plus territory
Hey guys,

So I've been able to get out and do a little practicing recently up here in MA and I'm trying to work on my swing but am unsure of what I should really focus on changing.

I have a few vids of my swing, sorry they aren't the best I just had my iPhone with me, I will try to get some better ones soon. Any tips / advice / critiques are welcome and thanks in advance!

The first few vids are of my driver swing with one face on and two down the line. The last one is a DTL of a 7 iron (hit a little thin).

Again thanks for any comments!

I see a couple of setup issues with your legs. First of all from the down the line views you stand very straight legged, its not a great base to hit from as far as I am concerned and I think you would be well served to get some more knee flex in there. From the face on view your driver stance is quite narrow which I would widen a bit but more importantly if you look at the angle of your legs they go straight down through your thighs and kind of jut out at an angle from the knee down. Partially this will be aided by some more knee flex but it would be good to work on getting your legs to go down at a consistent angle. Compare your legs at setup to Nick to get an idea of the changes you want to make:

There are a few other things going on that might be worth addressing but I would start with your setup.

Thanks a lot Thrillhouse! I'll try to get some work in on that tomorrow at the range.

Do you know of any drills I could use to work on this or is it more of just pay attention to my setup and make the changes? Past the setup what would you say are the most important things to work on down the road?

Sorry to bombard you with questions I'm just trying to get an idea of what I should try to change in the future.

Dont worry about asking too many questions, its best to get them all out there because there are a bunch of knowledgable people on this site who love to help people out with their swings so you will get a bunch of good ideas just by asking.

As far as working on your setup goes I think the best thing you can do is a whole lot of mirror work at home. Print off the faldo picture or get setup pictures of another tour pro you like and copy their leg position in the mirror, it will feel weird at first but it will give you a great idea of where you want to be and a great feel that you can take to the range. Past that keep using the video so you can monitor your progress, you will have to work on it but you'll get it.

Past the setup I see a bunch of good things in your swing, I really like the way your lower body works through the ball. That being said when I look at the position of your club at the top and the amount of head rotation on your backswing it looks like you are overswinging a bit. Its common amongst you young guys who want to get the ball out there a long ways but I think that working on a more compact position at the top of your swing with the 7 iron short of parallel and the driver at parallel rather than past would be a good idea. I like to see people keep their head stable on the backswing and just turn their left shoulder under their chin like charles does in this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8CDdnHTFDQ

Take a look at his backswing and his position at the top both with his head and with the club and compare it to yours and you will see what I am getting at.

The other thing I don't love is the overrotation of your right foot at finish which I think is often a result of overswinging to the point of being out of balance, its like you overotate the foot to keep yourself from falling over, I would rather you see in a finishing position more like this with your right foot:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwnSY8nYQyU

Paul Lawrie bombs it, but he doesn't over swing and he doesn't do anything at the expense of balance, its a good swing to watch and learn from.

Best of luck and if you have anymore questions don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks again for all of the great information Thrillhouse!

I definitely see what you are talking about and I will have to put some time into these changes. I've always noticed I've had that overrotation problem with my foot in my swing, I've just never put any stock into what causes it and how to go about fixing it. I'm definitely with you on shortening my swing up, and I hope that will help with that problem.

I'm going to put some serious time in on making these changes and I might shoot you a PM down the road for a little more advice. Thanks a lot!
