Grip - Club position in left hand?

Confused by Brian Mogg article
All right...I've searched numerous grip threads and didn't see a specific post that addressed this...

Looking though a past issue of Golf Mag, there was a 4-picture description of the grip by Brian Mogg. In placing the grip in the left hand, he said the club should rest BELOW the base of the pinkie (so it's actually in the top of the hand before your finger) and then the club extends diagnolly until it crosses the middle third of your index finger.

Thoughts?

I'm a mid capper and do not fight a slice and prefer a neutral grip so this seems great. Just want to make sure it's correct. I've always rested the entire grip along the base of the FINGERS in my left hand (at a slightly diagonal angle). This Mogg grip seems more secure.

With winter setting in soon, I'll likely just be indoors for a few months working on GRIP. Want to make sure I'm doing it correctly.

Thanks.

Effectively all it is doing is creating a "stronger" positioned grip. If you do not suffer from misses to the right (as a result on an open clubface), then you can simply disregard it.

A lot of teaching professionals advocate a "stronger" positioned grip simply because the large majority of golfers misses are to the right, and this is essentially an easy solution to the problem.

In my last years county coaching that is one of the main things my trainer told the lads of handicaps of around 8 upwards and promoted a ''grip with the fingers not the palms'' hold.

Wow - that grip feels weird. The left hand is way more in my palm than I'm used to - I hold it almost entirely in my fingers (the butt of the club crosses the bottom of my pinkie). I'll have to try a few balls with it the next time I'm out - but just trying the grip here in my office, it doesn't feel as though I could fully release the club.

I can, however, see how it might promote an almost automatic squaring of the club for folks that have problems doing so ... but I get the feeling the grip would gain a bit of accuracy at the expense of distance. Perhaps this is a grip for beginners trying to make the transition to intermediate levels?

Does anyone else here use a grip like this?

Like yourself I've been taught to keep the grip in the fingers. On the takeaway I can see where it forces the

wrist to hinge (not ****) differently than I'm used to but like you say it forces the back of the left hand to be square at impact.

The shaft angle is correct, but the position is not. If you take your grip with the left thumb pointing straight down along the right side of the shaft, at about the 1:00 or 1:30 position, and then turn your hand over so the palm is facing up and then open your hand the shaft should be laying on a line from the base of the left index finger to the dead center, or slightly to the right, of the fleshy left side pad. I believe that the main reason players have incorrect grips is that they don't really understand how the golf swing works. The two are inseparable. And, since many instructors have faulty swings and grips, there is mass confusion in the golfing community. Your grip is either correct or it's not, no in between.

I've emailed Brian Mogg via his website.

Also, below is the article (including pictures) of the grip Mogg advocates.

Well, Brian Mogg responded to my email...see below:

"You have it right as the club should never be exclusively in the fingers but should be just above the bottom fingers and then run through the index finger. Have a great winter and work this into a natural feeling so that it is comfortable and ready to go for spring. --Brian"

I'm sure some of you will agree or disagree with his grip instruction, but I for one am very impressed that he responded to my email within 12 hours. I simply wanted to confirm something of his that I read, and he took the time to respond. Well done Brian.

Meanwhile, I continue to practice the grip around the house and it feels very good.

I don't think I'd spend ANY time on this, as he's the only teacher I've ever heard of that advocates this.

Holding the club more in the palms like he's doing only prevents a proper release of the club. That's the last thing 95% of the players need.

This grip is slightly on the weak side IMO (great if you have overactive hands and a hooking problem). It forces you to release with your forearms more through the ball. I recently changed my grip and it is very similar to his recomendation (just slightly stronger). I saw no loss of distance and have increased accuracy and consistancy.

Thought I'd bump this topic with an update...also looking for more feedback.

After some time with the Mogg grip, the grip felt great but my swing has been off (pulling all my irons left...coming over the top with a slightly closed face).

Anyway, in desperation at the range, I switched back to my old more in the fingers grip and had some solid shots. Probably all mental. That said, in my latest range visit, I was back to the same pulls problem (I know it's a swing flaw and not grip flaw). So went BACK to the Mogg grip and preferred once again how it felt.

I will say this, from what I've researched, Mogg's grip is the same as Nicklaus writes in his book, and the same as Leadbetter writes in his re-writing of Hogan's fundamentals. So Mogg is NOT alone.

Here's Mogg's grip again for reference...

Again, my swing is hurting my game, not my grip. Both grips feel good but more in palm feels more secure. Just curious on opinions from the Pros here.

Thoughts???????????

Thanks!
