Pittsburgh golf(non private)

Any fellow WRXers from Pittsburgh area? I live in the city but not sure where the best places to play are in the area. I am looking for best bang for your buck. Here is where I have played in the area.

 

Cedarbrook

Williowbrook

Cranberry Highlands

Pittsburgh National

Madison Club

Old Stonewall

Chippewa

Grandview- NEVER AGAIN

Butlers both courses

Strawberry Ridge

Totteridge totteridge totteridge. About $50 for one of the best public golf courses In America, not just Pittsburgh.

I have heard that Totteridge was very nice. Actually forgot about it.

Quicksilver and Totteridge are pretty good.

quicksilver, totteridge, birdsfoot , cranberry highlands, Links at firestone farms in columbiana ohio probably around 55 min drive from heinz field.

Quicksilver is a good course with some challenging greens and holes that force you to play a specific shot from the tees (I play their often since I live nearby), however, stay away when off season rates are in effect. It becomes over-run with jeans-wearing Western PA hackers and you're guaranteed to be in for a 6 hour round. The pro shop is also partly to blame, as they space their tee times too close together and I've rarely seen rangers on the course helping to keep play moving along.

Also, I've never played Old Stonewall but have heard it's not worth the price of admission.

Birdsfoot and Cranberry Highlands are nice so is totterridge. Meadowink is 17 nice holes and then one what the heck were they doing. Unless they changed it. Pheasant Ridge is a great course and so is Links at Spring Church.

Totteridge- Best bang for the buck in Western PA

I need to get to Totteridge. Maybe later this year. I don't get around to the ones listed here as often as I'd like, mainly due to simple playing partners.
I mostly play Lindenwood as I'd guess I live closer to that course than anyone else on WRX.....not a bad muni to live next to, though I think it's overpriced.

Churchill CC just starting taking public tee times.
Blackhawk in Beaver is a great walking track (1&2).
The Club at Shadow Lakes is a nice traditional course.
If you want to grip it and rip it on a budget, you can't beat North Park.
Scenic Valley is a fun (but hilly) course.
Rolling Acres has some really nice greens.
3 Lakes (former Alcoma CC) is hit or miss...

PS. I also hated Grandview the first few times I played it. Once you know your way around, leave the driver in the bag for most tee shots, and accept it for what it is, target golf, it's a great track. (especially with a coupon)

What part of the city are you in? Because some places are easier to get o than others depending on this freaking construction every weekend gig that's going on....

I live about 5 miles from Lindenwood myself. Nice little muni for sure!

Just curious what makes you think Lindenwood is owned and operated by Peters township ??? i believe that is the municipality where that course is . I believe it is privately owned and yes it is over priced like some others in the Greater Pittsburgh area

I knew exactly what you meant and I didn't mean to infer that Peters Township owned and operated Peters. It is a privately owned course that is open to the public.

Not sure what the big deal was with the word "muni" anyways...

I live on the North Side now but moving out towards Penn hills this summer. I work in Cranberry so Highlands is where I try to get most of my rounds after work as of right now. I played Phoenix at Buffalo valley. It served its purpose for me. Played as a single and got done in 2.5 hours which was nice. I want to try Totteridge because it does look nice. Maybe I will give Grandview another shot. I liked Madison club and I look forward to the Westinghouse Outing I play in there. Just missed out on closest to the pin last year. So Churchill Country club is taking public tee times now? What about Treesdale? I know a couple of vendors that are members there. Worth it?

Penn Hills well you will be close to Churchill and 3 Lakes.

Waht did you think of Phoenix at Buffalo Valley? I live a couple miles from there and it is not in good shape. I play at Birdsfoot, River Forrest and Buffalo GC.

Treesdale is nice with 27 holes but there are some really quirky holes there. It is in very good condition (it's private) and is an Arnold Palmer design. I've played it three times and thought it was alright.

+1 for totteridge, played there twice so far this year. I'm taking a half day tomorrow and playing the links at nemacolin. I have an outing there on the 19th.

fyi if anyone is interested, my buddy puts together an outing every year for acheiva. Anyways, it's at the madison club this year. July 28th. I think it's 70/person that includes a steak dinner. It's a nice outing, we play 2 foursomes off the tees to cut down the cheating. If anyone's interested, shoot me a pm and i can email you the specifics, the more the merrier.

Anything closer than Totterridge, which Google says is an hour drive?

Anything nice out toward or even past the airport would work too, as I'm flying out Sunday evening.

If you are looking for something around the airport play Quicksilver.

I agree, Quicksilver is a great track!

Also near the airport is Moon Golf Club (mediocre), about 20 minutes or so past the airport you could try Rolling Acres or Blackhawk.

Logistically, any of those makes more sense than Totterridge.

I also live very close to Lindenwood...lets get out and tee it up one of these days.
