Practice ranges in CT

having trouble finding a good one

Background first:

I live in Southwest CT (Fairfield County) and have struggled mightly to find a range with "the works". (Grass Range, Short Game Area w/ Bunkers, Putting Green)

In all my searches I can't find a place that can match what I want. My home course has a pretty good practice green, but the range sucks (they don't let you hit anything but irons cause the range isn't long enough!).

Willing to drive max about an 1 hour, but that's not a set in stone proclamation.

Any help would be fantastic!

Great River has a really nice practice area. Lymans is about to open a new range and par 3 course in June that look good, but it's a bit of a hike.

Seems like a nice grass range is hard to come by in the public course arena.

Is Great River a public course? I thought it was private, or at least semi-private...

I'm not sure sorry. I played there through ezlinks so I assumed public but you may be right.

There's a grass range at the little executive course I play in Portland that I like but it's outside your distance limitations and is a bit short in terms of range distance.

Depending on where exactly you are Centennial in Carmel, NY has a grass range on friday-sunday. They also have a few practice greens and bunkers. Also, they have all you can hit times later in the afternoon

Willowbrook in South Windsor has a pretty good grass range and great practice greens. They do have a bunker to practice out of, but you can't play from it to the green. That is a bit of a hike from down there though.

Great River-semi-private..about $120 to play

Great River has a tremendous facility. They have twlight rates, $70 after 4:00pm

The Fairways Driving Range in Branford is great, but the putting green and sand practice areas are both a little small. The grass tees are lush and well maintained. The mats are the auto dispensing type, and they are softer material than other mats I have seen.

I don't know if it would be worth an hour drive for you, though, because it is best for just hitting a bucket and leaves a little to be desired for practicing other areas. The grass tees are definitely the best around. Kleins Range in Madison is about 15 minutes further, and they too have good grass (though not as good), and they have a better short game area.

Great River has the best practice facility in the area for all of the courses I've been to. It is public/semi-private but you don't need to know a member or anything like that to get on. I believe you can pay for the practice facilities only for the day or for an per hour fee. The course is top notch.

Yale also has some decent practice facilities but that course is semi-private and you need to know someone to play.

what's your home course?
