MB Locals: Home Course Suggestions

I'm in the process of moving to MB (currently commuting) and would like to find a house near a decent golf course (not on, but near).

 

I am planning to play around and sample all the local courses but I'd like to have a default course near-by to squeeze in a range session or a quick 9.

 

I'd like to find a course with a nice practice area and a strong group of regulars.

Im not local, but my parents have a place on Ocean Isle just north in NC. They got a place on Crow Creek right on SC border which is a nice enough course. Not a terrible challenging course in the physical sense, but I always play it poorly because the stress of trying to impress my father. I don't know your age range but, I really appreciate the property owners association there. Very nice close knit group of people that host a ton of events year round, as well as weekly games depending on handicap. Nice amenities also clubhouse, pool, tennis, community center with gym and pool table. Im only 28 and those folks are twice my age or better but I would move down there in a heart beat to hang with them.

Also, I just played Farmstead for the first time a month ago, and as far as courses go this one is AAA++. I cannot wait to get back down there and play again, some of the fastest greens I have played in that area.

Prestwick is a really nice course and facility that would fit your needs. Doesn't get as much play as some of the others either.

I can't imagine it's too terribly expensive to take up some kind of membership at TPC Myrtle Beach. Otherwise, Barefoot Resort and Legends Resort both have great practice facilities (Legends' is lighted) and multiple courses on-site.

Down south i would look at Prestwick if in surfside or going more southern you have TPC, Pawleys Plantation, Willbrook, River Club, Heritage, True Blue and Caledonia. Which are all top notch courses.

Legends, Barefoot, and Grand Dunes all have better than average to excellent practice facilities. Barefoot and Grand Dunes are MUCH more costly than Legends to play a "quick nine"or 18. Legends has three outstanding and very very busy courses on site. Grand Dunes has one course you can play unless you join to play the Members club there. Barefoot has four great tracks: Dye, Fazio, Love, and Norman designs always in excellent condition because they get TOP dollar to play from walk-on traffic; anywhere from around $80 up to $140 depending on the time of year. They are also very busy because of their popularity and excellence. There are many more really good tracks down here but some of the practice facilities at them are remarkably dissapointing. I am a member at Barefoot and I can testify that our practice facility is top notch but very sadly and surprisingly, there is no "annual fee" or driving range "membership" even for members of the resort so as a member I still have to pay for range balls everytime I go unless I am playing the day of, in which case I get a measly small bucket for free. Otherwise, Barefoot is a wonderful golf complex.

Thanks for the advice, I'll have to look into GD. Legends is a little too touristy for me to call home. That's disappointing to know about barefoot not including range balls.

I use the practice facility 5x as much as the course, so when joining somewhere that is a huge priority for me.

I haven't played it but have heard that Wachesaw Plantation Club (Private) is pretty good as well. Not that it matters, but have heard that's DJ's second home course in MB, too.

Not that it is in the southern end of MB but I just played Dunes Golf and Beach Club. It is a great track with good practice facilities. My favorite MB golf course. Heard that their membership and initiation are very reasonable. Heard the dues are like $4K a year total. To me living in the Philly Area that sounded like a steal. My source was the Grandson of a member.

Grand Dunes is abou $5g's a year with a $7.5 initiation.

TPC is $1500 a year with no initiation, but range balls are $3 for a large bag, which are normally $8.

I hit balls at the TPC on Monday. The practice facility was top notch; tons of targets on the range, well contoured putting green, and the short game green was fantastic.

TPC is my favorite track down here. It's also home to the Coastal Golf team but they will never be in the way because they have a private pratice facility.
