Pinehurst Trip Questions

Going to Pinehurst in about 2 weeks. Have a couple of questions for those who have been before.

We are currently booked to play #7 and # 4 on Friday, #2 on Saturday AM, and finish with #8 on Sunday.

We have not booked anything for Saturday PM yet. Would you knock off #6 or try to get on Dormie that afternoon?

Second question is about accomodations. We are booked at The Manor. Has anyone stayed at The Manor? I have only stayed at The Holly previously.

Not going to be in the room much with 90 holes in 3 days, but trying to figure out what to expect based on some mixed reviews I have been reading.

Thanks for the advice/input.

Just got back from PInehurst myself and did 36 a day. Played #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, #7, and #8. All were in pretty good shape but with slow greens. Didn't play #6 but have heard it's a good course that doesn't get much play from resort guests. Replay rate on 1, 3, and 5 are hard to beat at $30. #1 was actually the best of the three, We wanted to play Dormie as well but as the second 18 in 100 degree temps we decided against it.

I have only stayed at the Carolina on my visits but have heard the Manor isn't too bad. Are you on the package? If so, book your dining at the 1895 instead of the Carolina Dining Room. Also, try to have breakfast at the Carolina if you have time, I believe you have your choice on where to eat.

Enjoy your time there and don't forget to stock up on cups of ice water from the maniac hill if the temps are in the 100's.

BTW, putts don't break much on #4, #2 greens are soft and hold shots that normally roll off, and #7 greens are painfully slow.

[/quote]Thanks for the advice. We are on the package so the tips on the dining are definitely appreciated. Might convince them to play 1,3,5 as replay, but there is a strong desire to play Dormie by a couple of the guys.

"a strong desire to play Dormie" is well justified. I've never played any of the Pinehurst resort courses but I honestly think you'll be hard pressed to find better conditions than I saw at Dormie a few weeks ago. If the cost isn't too much (which, if you're playing a number of rounds at Pinehurst it shouldn't be) I would 100% try to get out to Dormie one day. Never know when they're actually gonna go private so it might be the only time you'll have the chance if your visiting from a ways away.

Nothing wrong with the manor. The pub in the basement of the manor has terrific sweet tea and wings if that's your thing and if it is you will not be disappointed. Rooms are nothing amazing but you'll be out playing golf all day. Air conditioning was a bit loud and no pool at that particular hotel but I found it away from the hustle and bustle of the main house and a nice place to relax after the day was through

In the Village you have Darling House (celtic pub), Dugans (american pub), Pine Crest ( a legend ) and the Magnolia Inn. The Mag has a great patio and ususally has entertainment thursday thru saturday evening.

New is Maxies, a locals favorite, sort of a sports bar. A short walk from the PineCrest. Located just south of the traffic cicle is Hickory Tavern, another sports bar/tavern.

The right way to do it is, pace yourself and hit all the spots in the Village; Magnolia, Darling House, Dugans (late night is best), PineCrest and Maxies. All can be walked and likely should be, do not drink and drive in Pinehurst. Just follow the crowd. Two other spots worth considering are the Patio Bar at the Pinehurst resort members club, sit back and watch the golfers come up the 18th fairway of #2. This is a late afternoon or early evening thing. The Ryder Cup lounge at the Carolina Hotel can also be a good time, great place to master a rocking chair and enjoy a cigar.

There seems to be two good times to hit the bars; the Happy Hour from 4-6pm and then the after dinner crowd 8:30 to 10:00.

If you can't tell I frequent these establishments on a regular basis.

If you all are playing 36 each day, I doubt you will have much energy left by days end. Enjoy!

My experience with Dormie was different. First off the people were great. From the time you arrive until you leave they are super.

Problem is I was expecting so much and disappointed. Great shape yes. As a matter of fact super shape especially the greens.

Layout not so much. If you can't drive in the fairway on the first hole then take up another game. Too open for my taste. The back had a few really nice holes but to a man our group was not impressed.

  • 3 weeks later...

Headed to Pinehurst tomorrow with customer for work. Playing #2 and #4 and staying at the Carolina.

Always nice to be doing that on the company dime. Looks like rain ahead.

Just got back Thurs. I was there with a corporate even so it was quick (and free!)

Anyway, played #4 and #3 on Tues. #2 and #8 on Wed.

#4 and #2 were obviously the best. #3 was dissapointing. It had 1500 junior golfers come through in the last 2 weeks. Greens were pretty awful. #8 was the toughest for me. I think most of that was because we had already played 54 holes in less than 24 hrs and the rough. It was nice having #2 with no rough. All one cut until you hit the waste areas but you could play just fine from pineneedles and the sand. It rained us the whole time to sand was pretty easy to play from.

The rough on #8 was brutal for me. 2 cuts. Trying to hack a 7i from 150 just wasn't cutting it. Had to grab a wedge and get playbale again.

All in all can't beat 72 holes there in 2 days.
