what did trevino play to win his us opens?
[/quote]
I remember reading something years ago about the 68 US Open..Maybe an eye-o-matic 60 driver. The one thing I do recall is that the article said he used a Tommy Armour putter he had tinkered with for hours. I think the article referred to a "souped-up Tommy Armour putter." I think he made just about every putt he looked at that week.
I refer to the eye-0-matic 60 driver because I remember a Faultless Golf Ball ad in the late 60's with Trevino in the picture promoting the ball..."endorse it? Hell, I play it" In the photo, he was standing with a driver in his hand, showing the sole plate and part of the face and a golf ball in the other. The club was an obvious MacGregor. But the butterfly sole plate had been replaced with one that had "Faultless" stamped on the bottom...that or there had been some creative air-brushing done to the photo. I think Faultless was an early 2-piece ball. If he ever played in PGA tournaments with that ball, I will kiss a pig on main street, and give you an hour to draw a crowd.
But whatever he played, that dog could hunt.

Look at entry number 6. Ralph Maltby, who worked for Faultless, answers the question about whether or not Lee actually played that ball. You won't have to kiss that pig!

I played the Faultless Futura starting out as a teenager in the early 70s. A dollar a sleeve at the local drug store. I never had this happen, but my father in law told me of playing with a guy who was using those and when he would thin an iron a hunk of the ball would fly off. Must have had some sharp leading edges on those irons.

The worst ball I ever used was a one piece called the Par Rite Plus. It was a Korean product that K-mart sold in the mid 70s. Easily 50 yards shorter off the tee than anything else.

Trevino won his second PGA WITH A PING ABLADE, a Rawlings metal driver, a Toney Penna three wood, Neumann leather grips. He was under contract to Rawlings golf. All were true temper dynamic shafts.

I found some Lee Trevino Faultless forged blades at a church thrift shop for a buck a piece. It was the 5, 7, 9 irons and pitching wedge. The 4 and 6 iron were in the bin too. The 3 and 8 iron was missing. So I bought the clubs I knew I would use the most. Went back the other day and now the 4 iron is gone. Today I took them to my local golf course to get re gripped.

Sorry but I interpret entry number 6 as there will be some pig kissing.

Read it again. I think it's pretty clear that the gist of Ralph's story (and he worked for Faultless so he would know) is that Lee never played that ball, and joked about the endorsement.
