Got My Scotty Newport AOP Back From Torrey Rat!

Just got another beautiful putter restoration done from George at Torrey Rat Golf. The first one he did for me was a Scotty California that was matte black but I can't seem to find the pictures of it so I figured I'd share the latest one. To start with the customer service is excellent and George is a great guy. I got phone calls, text messages and pictures of the putter all the way through! We also spent a little time playing Torrey Pines which was great and even better because it was a guided tour of an amazing course by a guy who has played it 100's of times! Now on to the putter.

 

This putter started off pretty worn with some rust spots and in real need of some TLC. (sorry but no before pics) When I gave the putter to Torrey Rat I wasn't sure exactly what I wanted to do with it so with a little help from George I decided to go with a mystery finish! They have a process they use which produces a complete one off finish. We new it would be some kind if oil can but not sure the exact colors and patina that would come out. The guys in the shop get to playing with the chemicals and see what happens. It turned out unreal with a patina like I have never seen! The back cavity and top line where done it matte black. Since I didn't know exactly how the finish on the face and sole were going to come out I waited on choosing the paint fill until the one off finish was done. George sent me some pics as soon as the finish was done and site line added and I choose to go with the Tiffany Blue to match the Blue coming out in the patina. I also had them deep mill the face, add a site line and bring the head weight up 350 grams and install a Tiffany Blue Iomic grip to match the paint fill. The putter turned out great and the customer service was excellent. Check out the pictures below and let me know what you think.

They added right around 20 grams and PM me for pricing info. I don't think they let you talk about it on this forum.

So, how was the weight added? Tip? Plating?

For those wondering, 24 grams added in the tip weight fashion is a good deal of weight. I am trying to picture 24 grams of tungsten powder and am seeing a pretty nice pile.
Will this throw off the balance of the putter? Only the owner will be able to say how the putter feels, but it is possible.
OP, let us all know how the putter hangs and how it feels when you get it on the short grass. I will be very curious.

Nick,
I had it out last weekend and the balance felt great. The putter feels solid. Balance wise it didn't feel any different than my factory 350 gram putters. I was a little concerned about adding that much weight to the tip but it worked out fine and feels good rolling the ball. Let me know if there are any other questions guys.

There you go. I was hoping that you'd be able to give a playing review.
The reason it concerned me was that if you did the same thing, only by taping a 25 gram weight to the toe of the putter, do you think it would have adverse effects?

You have to add alot more weight down the shaft if you're going this route. I had to add 20 grams of shaft weight (tip weight plus a heavier shaft) to achieve a similar balance or 'feel' of 5g added to the sole. A few of my putters are done this way. It is definitely a different feel than added weight to the bottom of the head.
BTW the finish looks awesome.

Before you added the heavier shaft what was the issue with the balance when only the tip weight was added?

Ohh now it all makes sense. I knew there had to be some nerds from Tech around helping run this computer stuff for all us dummies out there. You probably also need to fill the time during football season. Don't worry your only missing another hand off quad option right. Go Dawgs! "Nerds, Nerds, Nerds, Nerds, Nerds!" LOL
