MacGregor Tourney Custom?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I just got these irons and was curious if anyone had an idea as to what time frame they might be from? I dont know anything about them nor did the seller regarding their origins. They are very simply stamped and have just the number on the sole in a larger size and different font. The number is different from many Mac irons I have had or seen before but I have found some photos of other irons with the same number stamps but, not many. There are no serial numbers either. Leather wrapped grips with a gold pin stripe. No diamonds on the face and very long hosels. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Most likely from sometime between 1958-1963/64. No FC400 face? No "recessed weight" markings? Just a guess, but I'd say they were a custom grind.

I think they are customs from the late 1980's. The fact that the wedge is a 10 iron and the Tourney Custom stampings as well as the font stamp for the numbers on the soles. A few months ago there was a string here with copies of a Mac custom catalog from that era. There were 4 club heads available, one of which was this big diamond. Neat clubs, regardless of their age. How do they feel when you hit them?

Interesting that they could be that new or as old as BrianL99 might think. They just seem to have a much older "feel" to them than 80's. By feel I just mean thats the sense I get when I hold them or swing them. But, the numbers stamp/style I have only seen on a couple sets from the 80's so....

They feel great but they sure are tiny!

The number stamped on the ferrules could help you with the age. There is a letter which should indicate the year built. 1st digit is swing weight, then model, I think. But I don't know how long after the mid 1960's MacGregor continued to use that system. And I don't know the sequense for the years. I guess I am no help here. But really great looking clubs, any way you look at them.

They are odd. If I'm not mistaken, all of the "standard available" irons from the 60's with the "diamond", had CF4000 faces. That said, I agree with you, I've never seen a 60's vintage MacGregor iron with a PW marked "10" ... that's usually late 70's, early 80's ?

MacGregor (& Wilson) would make you just about anything if you asked or knew someone, so it's often very difficult to pinpoint the vintage of their clubs.

BrianL99, I sort of get the sense they were something extremely custom or made for a staffer or something like that? They just have that look to them and they feel like they would swing weight quite heavy and the shafts are really stiff feeling. I play x200 in my regular set and these feel like I cuold play them without changing anything. The more I have looked at them and considering how nice they are I just want to hang on to them and keep them out of the dirt! I am not really that guy though so.......who knows?

1980, I sold a set last summer, looked just like these...they are on page 4 of the 1980 catalog of the Jim Kaplan book. I quote " Diamon Back Design This famous MacGregor Back design concentrates the weight balance behind the hitting area for maximum distance. Available in right hand only." Came with Dynamic, Pro-Pel, and Response shafts. Hope this helps...
