One of the guys that I play with is in his early sixties. He plays the mens tees and usually shoots high 70s low 80s. His bag is a mix match collection. It is an eclectic mix. Think Discount Store bargain bin meets thrift store/yard sale. He has an old TM Burner Driver, 10 year old Cobra irons, a $5 3 wood and a $3 5 wood (or Vice Versa) freebie wedges and an old ping putter. I find it funny that all the importance we put on equipment and he is out there getting it done with this trick or treat grab bag ;)

He also has major game. Deadly from 100 and in. Rarely ever three puts. He pulls out shots that you would never see in Golf Digest. He has this shot. The best I could describe it would be a 5 wood chop/punch. 140 yards money every time. A totally unorthodox game. It makes me stand back and smile. I love watching him make a young gun with the latest and greatest sweat.

A good friend and co-worker of mine has the oddest mix match set I've seen. He always ask me for a stroke a hole....which I never give and we always have a good match.

He uses a driver I sold hiim for $50 years ago, the Hippo 400cc...at the time it was the biggest head out and he hits the heck out of it. He also carries another driver which is approximately 300cc, 10* of loft and is actually a clone of a TM head that he uses as his 3 wood. His 3 wood is another clone of a TM head. The irons are Callaway Big Bertha clones he bought when we were up in Vegas after he won a grand. The set was on sale for $300 at the Nevada Bob's and he's been using them for over fifteen years now. He putts with an old Odyssey Rosie which I just changed the grip on after telling him that the wadding on his WINN grip wasn't supposed to be coming out all over the place! He uses his putter from everywhere. I've never seen a guys use a texas wedge so much, including from traps. Even his bag is a "hand me down" from 808golfer. Prior to that he was using a bag that I won and gave to him which he used till all the color had faded! He's definitely proof that it's not what you use but how you use it.

I dont really know anybody like this. But I do know a guy that is the complete opposite of this. Lots of new clubs, and doesn't really have a solid skill level, its sad. Its amazing how good some people are even with supposed "outdated" equipment. A friend of mine who is a teaching pro used a 300 tour driver all the way up until this year...he hit that thing great.

That right there is the reason he is good. Inside 100 yards is where its at if you want to score.

Also goes to show that people who don't change clubs all the time get more consistent with the clubs they have, but then again they don't get the fun of hoing clubs. :P

I agree and would like to add this: How would ebay survive if it wasn't for us club HO's? ;)

this is a great topic, there is a guy at my dads club who was a real player back in the 1970s, he was a top amateur in the state. I think he's in his early 80s now, I've played with him years ago and his clubs were something you might find at a flea market. He did have a 80s Taylor made driver and his irons were a complete mess. He hardly ever shot above 78. He played to a 2 or 3 handicap well into his 70s. He also played with balls he found. The guy is legandary.

Certainly do or did, when I first started playing comp golf in my twenties played with a gent in his mid fifties who didn't hit the ball a long way but kept it on the fairway, if he was within 100 yards of the green he jabbed a 7 iron everytime, no higher than about 6ft landed it just in front of the green and it would roll to within 6ft at worse on every hole, if he was within 10ft of the green he'd 7 iron chip to one ft. I thought it was a fluke the first time I played with him in the morning but then he repeated it in the afternoon round and then subsequently every time I was partnered with him. On questioning him he said he just played it as if he was hitting a long putt, he read the burrows on the fairways and then read the green.

Well I'm still fixated on the pro version of this: Allen Doyle - not the clubs, but the swing. It was really strking to see him beat Watson in the Senior Open. There was Watson, with his gorgeous swing - just absolutely textbook in almost every way - and there was Doyle, with no backswing, a turn/jab for a stroke, beating the pants off Watson.

There was a fellow who played with our group for a while - wore cutoffs or shorts with holes in them, had nothing much for clubs, and hit a huge banana slice. When you first saw him swing, he looked like the worst hacker imaginable. And he was a gambler, made some fair money in his day, suckering in the high rollers with his banana slice and then just beating the pants off them when it came to money shots.
