GPS that can track distance by club

dbdors

Recommended Posts

I currently have a Skycaddie SG5. It was won in a raffle by my wife, so I don't have a lot invested in it. I've only used it for a year now. My renewal will be up in another month. It has been okay, but I'm not crazy about it (I hate this renewal issue, when other offer maps included. And I hate the limit of 20 courses.

Being a hi handicapper one feature that I use a lot is marking my shots and measuring distance. I working on learning my distances for each club.

I'm thinking about replacing it before upping the renewal.

One thing that I'd like is ease of use, touch screens etc. But Id really like to be able to track my distance by club. So for example, before a shot I'd mark my ball, enter select the club used, make the shot and then mark the next spot. This would log the shot distance by club.

What other GPS's will do this. So far I believe the Garmin Approach G6 will. But are there any others?

What are you favorite GPS's.

Every GPS unit Ive ever come into contact with has the "MARK" feature. Hit your ball. tap the mark button, walk out to your ball. THe GPS tells you how far you are from the point where you hit mark.

I know all the IOS apps have this as well as the SG2, SG3, and SG4. Look in your manual. I'm certain the SG5 can to this.

I have a rangefinder. I mark my drives by walking out to my ball and then turning around and shooting the ballwasher on the tee box. Typically it's within 10 yards of where I stood. +/-.

Yes the SG5 can do that, I use the feature all the time (see my OP). But it doesn't track by club. I'd like to select the club on the GPS, then mark and track distance. Right now I have to remember to write the disantacne down on a score card. Be nice if the GPS recorded the value by club. As I understand from the G6 reviews, it will average clubs.

TJCDAS, I'll get the manual for the G5 and check it out as well. I would prefer it as it is a bit cheaper.

The SG5 has the mark feature. You hit the button on the upper left side with the ball and curved arrow. You will get a prompt confirming you would like to mark and hit the left soft key to confirm. When you get to your ball, repeat the procedure. Also if you do this on your tee shots, when you sync the SG5, it will download the tee shot distances along with your scorecard to ClubSG. Your manual has more information on this.

I have a new favorite, a GPS called i'mcaddie. it cannot only track your distance, but it gives you a verbal distance at a touch of a button all AUTOMATICALLY, no fumbling for different screen shots or other gadgetry ! Found it at the 2012 PGA show...bought one online as it wasn't available in the stores yet, but is huge in Asia (Have an expat friend who lives overseas and had already tried it and loved it). I've replaced my Bushnell 1600 and my wifes Skycaddie (No more damn subscription fees). simple to use, inexpensive and extremely lightweight (clips to your hat).

[/quote]Thanks, but I know that already. But it wont keep track of the club. Yes, it will tell you the Tee shot on down load (but not driver, 3W, etc), but no other clubs after that.

In doing a review of the Approach G5 I found that it does not keep track of clubs either. Yes, it will mark, but looks like the G6 has the ability to load clubs in the GPS and the track by club. I'm looking for other good GPS units that will do the same thing as the G6. I'm just not familiar with all the available units.

I've been looking for some comparison websites, and will keep looking.

Okay, unfortunately I don't have a phone that I really want to use for this, (Blackberry 9300). I've done some more reviewing (downloading manuals). And it appears that the G6 is the only one so far that I've found with club distance that Id like. The Callaway uPro MX did have it, but it was removed for the MX+. Callaway says they may intro it later, but for now it's not.

I'll keep looking, but may get a G6 at some point.

Ahh you wanted to document marks by club - didn't get that.

Sorry don't know. I keep that in the old noggin. But I can dig that it could be handy.

The Golf Guru's mark feature enabled you to save not only the club but where you hit the ball from (tee, fairway, rough). Unfortunately, it stored GPS points for the yardage so you had to have access to the GPS satellites to review what you saved after the round - It didn't save the associated yardages, just the coordinates that are compared to give you that yardage. Weird way of doing things!

Unfortunately I only have an older blackberry, that I don't really like any more (but it's free so I live with it). I'm leaning heavily towards the G6. Will do a little more research.

yes it does track yardages, everybody is aware of that but if you read what the op wants in a gps which is to store yardages for a specific club then no it doesn't
