Tear Drop Putters

Has anybody used and liked them??

I played with a guy this weekend that was sinking putts from everywhere with his roll face Tear Drop putter. Any opinions on these putters?

I used one of the black ones. Half mallet head. TD19 or something like that. It's a great putter and I still have it in one of my bags :fool:

I always seemed to putt well with Teardrops and IMO, the best Teardrops were the very last series known as the Teardrop Select Series. These all had a very nice mirrored chrome rear design but with a grooved stainless steel rolled face that added a nice contrast. These were sold in the 2001-2002 as best I can recall now, but few shops would even carry them because by then the future of Teardrop as a company was well-known and so the Select Series run ended shortly after it made its debut. I do vividly remember picking up all (9) models for next to nothing at the time Teardrop was going completely out of business. Dealers just dumped the inventory seemingly overnight. I also remember thinking at the time what a great deal and what a nice mix of putters this was. I also thought at the time I would never buy another putter and I do still have all (9) packed away in storage somewhere. These were fine putters all and worked very wellfor me, but for some strange reason I went absoutely nuts over Bettinardi's, in 2003 and abandoned my Teardrop Select Series collection. I managed to buy multiple Bettinardi's as well that year,(paying considerably more), but at least I have not been tempted to buy any other putters since 2003.

 

I recall those (9) Teardrop models well. They consisted of (4) basic head designs and (4) of the (9) models were traditional ANSER-styled heads but had varying hosel types. (Straight, Mid-Slant, Plumber's Neck, and Curved, hosels). I also recall that it was one very unique slick-looking 8802 styled putter that initially caught my eye, (the TD Select Series model 510). It was the only 8802 styled putter I have seen before or since that was nearly center-shafted. (All previous versions of that style putter were heel-shafted designs).

 

The remaining head designs in the Teardrop Select Series were non-Anser, yet familiar-looking blade designs and several featured a rear flange. (There were no true mallets in the series, however.

 

After reading this post, I should probably go and dig them out just for kicks and old times sake..

A study by the Samlab guys states that the best roll is attained by an effective loft at impact less than the angle of attack. That is if you impact the ball at a 3* upswing, the loft should be less than 3*....close to 1* I believe. I've always observed rollface putters to put a slightly smoother roll on putts than my straight faced putters.

 

The rollface deal was adopted by the Tommy Armour series and I tried one today. Looked good (many models....I chose one that looked like a small SC #5) with good headweight (350g).

 

Another niche company called Qroll now sells their wares out of Edwin Watts. I have one of their fugly original designs that rolls the ball great but looks like puke.

I got mine today. Great balance. The topline is a little thin but is tolerable. Rolls the ball great and I like the finish. Came in as 33" so I think I will replace it with a UST FF shaft and see how it goes. Thanks for the input guys.

I currently have a TD-42 carbon steel that's their version of the 8802. These always put a great roll on the ball. I contemplated getting it refinished and in play, but my carbon steel Bettinardi BB-2 putters aren't leaving the bag anytime soon.

I recently bought a Bettinardi C03H and it’s a nice putter but I don’t think it is as forgiving as my teardrop TD31. I wanted to check how I was rolling the Bettinardi so I lined up some range balls and gave them a few rolls. Overall I was rolling them pretty good maybe one out of every four or five had a wobble. I got out the Teardrop to compare and sure enough almost every was rolling straight end over end. It might be a little harder to throw the Teardrop out of the bag then I thought.

i have a teardrop td31 putter. to let you know how i feel about it, let's just say it will be in my bag for a very long time. :man_in_love:
