I will be staying at HBS between Feb and March and later on from April till May . What can you recommend for somebody that want to play there around . Do you think will be feasible to play in Feb or there will be snow and too cold ? If you should get a flight and go somewhere to play on sat/ sunday where do you suggest .Many Thanks

Feb is a complete crapshoot. Are you accustomed to playing golf in the cold for the courses that would be open? What's "too cold" for you?

You'll be better off keeping the clubs at home until the latter trip back. Some courses don't even open until mid-March.

As far as a flight, Boston Logan is an international airport. Glasgo Scotland is less than an hour farther flight than San Diego CA. ;) Money no object? Anywhere in Fl or SC (3hrs).

Feb is going to be a wash. Don't get your hopes up. Late March should work, but every once in a while there is a freak snowstorm that dumps a foot or two of snow, so be ready for that. April should be good, May will be great.

Sean2 (one of our regular members here) is around the Boston area I think, he might be a good person to PM.

February would be very difficult to play golf. The weather in the Boston area is very fickle. Last year was good during the winter. The year before that we were buried under snow. Late March is better, but that's usually what we call "mud season"...the courses are very wet and as Mad said, we could still get a blizzard. Late April and into May is much better. :-)

Last year you could have played nearly all season. I played in NH in January last year, and could have played nearly every weekend. This year, you could play this weekend. But those are unusual. Generally, golf around Boston in February and early March is either unpleasant or impossible. The most likely options for the truly hearty are to go down towards the Cape, as they usually get less snow accumulation. Personally, I'd probably prefer to go hit balls at a heated driving range or even go play on a simulator...but usually we northern New Englanders just go into hibernation for a few months.

I have a few friends at HBS that golf. Let me know when you're in town and we can link up for outings.

Nothing is particularly predictable here as far as suitable weather for golf. I played in December and January last year as it was fairly dry. The main issue isn't whether it's nice enough to play but rather if there are any courses open. For example, it was plenty warm enough to play yesterday but I doubt there's anything near Boston that is still open. The only course that is reasonable close and open year-round is South Shore Country Club. It stays in fairly good shape through on and off snow and is the best bet for winter golf around here, as far as I've found. Most (all?) of the Plymouth courses are closed until March so to get any other options you have to drive to the Cape. It's worth it for a weekend but it's too far for a day trip unless you're really in need of a round. Rhode Island is another option but I don't know what's open or worth going to.

There are a few, but one of the better winter courses is Montaup in Portsmouth RI. Thing is, everyone knows this and it's 1st come 1st serve, no advanced tee times until spring. It was packed this weekend. If you're not there at 1st light to get a time, you're going to wait a couple hours, even as a single.

That said the greens roll at around a 10 and true, even if it's misty and foggy. Crazy good greens for this time of year. Your brain says they shouldn't be that fast, but they are! They were really soft at that, high approach shots were plugging. Chips/pitches checked nicely, etc...

In Westerly, both Winnapaug and Weekapaug were open yesterday as well. Winnapaug was packed. We played 27 over at Weekapaug. Even though the course was short due to temporary tees, it was in pretty darn good shape for January. And of course, golf in New England in January is always a good thing.

Thanks all for valuable feedback .Will be landing saturday but I am getting that it is basically frozen there . I ll bring my golf clothes along anyway even if I ll have to rent clubs and see what happens .I ll be probably free sat noon and sunday and weather allowing why not!
[/quote]There's a storm coming Friday into Saturday. If it dumps as much as they say it is, and covering as large of an area as they say, it's going to be a little while before much golf is going to happen in the area.
