Under 5 hours will be a hard thing this time of year, you need to go in summer to get that.

Quite a few courses are running under 5 hours right now even with full tee sheets; River Club, Blackmoor, Wachesaw, Willbrook Plantation, to name a few.

I would avoid burning ridge, river oaks, arrowhead, palmetto. Hit wild wing and either barefoot fazio, or hop in car for Tidewater, heritage. Grande dunes is overrated. True Blue, Caledonia, Dunes are all great courses but never discount for earlybird or twilight times.

I'm curious as to why you feel Grande Dunes is overrated and when did you play it last?

I appreciate all the insight. 5 hours early in the morning sounds awful, is it because of hunting for golf balls? even with 100 courses in the vicinity, it's amazing on the wait time. during the season in south central pa, early tee times finish in 4 hours. Any recommendations on club/bag rentals? I saw a web ad for low country golf, offering $30 per day, which seems reasonable, but if martin's is right down the street and the same price, that's even better. Is there a "gator" rule there?

bruinspatirish: So it's better to book a few days before and at martin's rather than the desired course? curious about the reason.
much obliged for your tips.

Everyone's tee sheets are starting to thin out a little bit, definitely a big difference than een last week. Hackers are galore for sure though!

What is so wrong with the courses you listed ?? they might not be in AAA condition but are on the more inexpensive side if you prefer to spend less money , i have played Grande Dunes a few times and it's okay also........ i see you listed places like Caladonia, Tidewater ..... yes they are very nice and probably the most expensive courses next to someplace like Dunes Club on the Strand ....... some people don't want to spend over 100 dollars surcharges plus normal green fee's for some courses

That is why i put Wild Wing on list. It can be had for$50/55 and is an interesting layout, usually in very nice shape at a nice price. I also very clearly stated the other courses are nice but more expensive. Pairing wild wing and a better course(More expensive) is the way to go if u can sneak out for only two roundsw limited funds. I don't enjoy going out of state to play boring layouts with poor conditioning and 5 1/2 hour rounds. my opinion.

Played both courses(regular/members) over the past three years on various packages and just do not feel either of them is in top 15 courses ive played over the past 15 years. Its always ranked on lists as a top 5 course...i just didn't find the layout as awe inspiring as others seem to. The one year the regular course was in incredibly bad shape. Greens totally burned brown. Its not that i think its terrible or anything...i just would rather play Rivers edge, tidewater , or ten other courses ahead of it at that price point.

also if u read the initial reply a little closer im telling him not to play caledonia, true blue , dunes....because they all never discount anything at any time.

I thought wachesaw & willbrook were very good courses and hadn't heard much about them til last trip. A very pleasant surprise.

The man is just saying if you go that far play something better. I also agree the other courses are also good but conditions can be totally different between them but this is all a matter of opinion.

I played in just over 3 hours in the AM at the Dunes club last week. Once as a twosome once as a single. Greens were lightning.
Dunes Club is renovating their greens this summer and putting in a hybrid Champion or Tif eagle bermuda can't remember which... they are getting ready for the PGA Professionals Championship they will be hosting very soon!
Dunes is going to Mini Verde
