Please help me working on some stuff - Hcp 5

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I made a lot of changes to my swing earlier this year and that's the current result:

It's a Mizuno MP H4 Iron 2, a really great club off the tee when you need to control your tee shot.

Anyway, I still have a couple of issues I need to resolve:

1) I'm trying to work on my release and need more of a body release with better hip rotation. I think it's hard to change and so far nobody was really able to help me with it.

2) Decreasing hand rotation. My typical shot is a hook and most of the time it's a controlable shot. But sometimes it really isn't and I can't afford such variance. I already narrowed my stance considerably and my setup is more upright. My hands are closer to my body. But it's still hard for me to repeat good shots this way.

3) I need to decrease body movement during the backswing and swing through. My head moves a bit to the right during back swing and my feet are moving to much during the swing through.

All these issues don't occur with shorter clubs. But when clubhead speed increases my weaknesses are exposed.

What do you guys think? Btw, my bad shots with this new setup are pulls. I rarely hook. Good shots are pretty straight or decent draws.

Hi Lane,
thanks a lot for your reply, it did not show up in the first place though.
I'm aware of it and have been working on it lately starting with a setup that does not support such a roll over (tighter stands, hands lower etc). I think the result is already decent as nobody could find real weaknesses with my setup. However, the pull/hook problem still occurs even though more infrequently and less intense.
How did you resign as king of pullers? What have you done to fight this tendency? I assume that I need some practice that helps to get this movement into my subconscious mind. Telling myself that I must not use the hands won't do it I think. I tried it a lot and the result where shanks or really bad pushes. I think those resulted from the thought "just not to close the club face" and thus I was blocking it instead. Every advice is highly appreciated. I'll do whatever it takes even if that means I have to work for months.

Hi Lane, thanks again for the feedback. I was already looking for the book you mentioned and it seems to be out of stock. Can get a used copy for $300 here. But I've found excerpts here and after reading the slot part I already have a better imagination. To be honest, I created some new videos (see below) and thought that this should not be the issue at the moment as I really can't see how the right hand is rolled over. But I assume that it will look just fine for a few shots but once the ball position, lateral movement or anything is slightly changed I start pulling or pushing. That might explain why I can hit 5 balls perfectly down the line and the next 2 30 yards+ off with longer clubs. I definitely have to look into this a lot more and if anybody knows where to get a copy of the book to a fair price please let me know. I have to admit that I'm already working on the "dead hands" concept as outlined in Pelz' short game bible and I'm really having some success already after a few drills. Any advice on how to work on it for the long game is highly appreciated.

Ajtothec,

Dead Hands-- ever asked exactly what the hell that means ? I still don't know after studying golf for 40 years . I just chalk it up to the same old reguritated nonsense we have been taught .
42 % of our Brain is DEDICATED to the use of our HANDS. Of course . we use them. They are the only connection to the shaft /lever.
Now -- looking at your video from the frontal view, it is obvious what is happening and you will continue to pull shots unless you conquer this issue, About halfway during your DS your right hand has started to release/ hit and force your right arm to straighten. You have lost your angle and the toe of your club will rotate past the heel and --the PULLS. You brought your lever halfway down and your hands did exactly as they are designed to do. You must teach your hands --NOT to hit. There is NO release from the top. Pull the heel of your clubface down around and past your body with the HEEL of your hands--AKA a Karate Chop with the HEELS of the hands side -on directed toward the inside quadrant of the ball. NEVER with the intent to release the lever. Pull that lever system down and around intact. The wrist are ONLY free- swinging hinges on the end of your arms. Keep them relaxed. Trust me-- the torso WILL square the face.
Regards,

Lane

Hi Lane,
a short feedback on my process so far. I've read Gerry Hogans book and have a far better understanding now (at least I think so). What I've done last week was changing my grip and overlocking two fingers instead of one. I just tried some stuff and this works best for me so far as I have the feeling that it makes it harder to let the right hand rotate. I also try not to use my right hand at all and have the picture of Vijay Singh in mind how he strikes through.

During the DS I try to keep my right ellbow bent, also through impact. I studied McIllroys swing a bit and that's something he does very well in my opinion. My new swing thought is to bring the club face open to the ball and close it due to torso rotation. That creates a few pushes right now but that's ok I think. They are not way off (and slight push hooks) and this way it's almost impossible to create pulls.

If you have more advice or exercises or have another opinion I'd appreciate any input.
