96' Cameron Newport question

I just bought one and it needs to be refinished. It has a gouge in the topline and a few dings other places. The putter was already refinished once but got damaged.

Is the putter worth sending back to the Cameron studio being that it is an older model, or should I go the cheaper route with one of the other services?

Does putterplating.com work on gouges?

If there are nicks/gouges on the face the face will have to be remilled, which brings the cost up to close to $100 with shipping from Putterplating.com

Yes.

Also, I haven't seen how big the gouge is, and even Cameron Studio won't be able to fix anything too deep without significant loss to the head weight.

You will not have significant loss of head weight if you send it to the Cameron shop because they do not simply grind down the dings and dents. They are filled and then ground down with NO significant loss at all.

In my opinion if you have a 96 Newport....I wouldn't think of sending it to anyone else but the Cameron shop.

I agree. As I get sucked deeper into the vortex of this little hobby, I have learned that the older the model the more likely a proper restoration will add value.

Assuming the Custom Shop will do the finish you are after, the money you may save by getting Putter Plating or whoever will be more than recompensed by having a 'correct' restoration.

When you sniff around www.cameroncollector.com, you soon realise that the value of an unrestored elder putter is about the same as an after market restored one. In other words, the $60-100 you will spend will be wasted on resale.

You may as well hand paint it yourself and just game it.

I'd spend the extra 30-40 for the custom shop. You get a new shaft, shaft band, grip, headcover, perfect head and the all-important stamp of approval.
