For those that don't know, Calgary is a city of 1 million plus that was inundated with rapidly rising flood waters Thursday night and through Friday. The flooding began due to heavy rains (8" in 24 hours) in the mountains upstream of the city that- combined with greatly accelerated snowpack melt due to rains- quickly overwhelmed the rivers and flooded the mountain towns, then Calgary and soon the cities downstream of us.

btw, has this happened before in calgary in recent memory??............. when i lived in winnipeg, i couldn't believe how much it rained on an easter weekend (probably 4 or 5 years ago). was like being in a car wash all weekend

There were big rains in 2005, but it was different. We got hit by 3 storms in a row over a week, and the water gradually rose up. The flooding was bad, this is much worse.

Two major rivers flow around and through Calgary. Both are fed from the Rockies, and both are over their banks by a large margin.

It came faster, the water is higher and the damage much more widespread.

For a major metropolitan area, this is devastating.

thanks for the photos. seen some pretty amazing river banks in winnipeg, although i wasn't there for the big flood.... not sure if the satellite photos are still online but there was a huge lake south of winnipeg where no lake exists.

Obviously - on current form - it wouldn't do Ames much good to make a similar pledge.
Kidding aside, have lots of relatives in Alberta (a few in Calgary, but thankfully most a bit of a drive north of the city) and I sure hope the gov't throws a good chunk of oil and tar sands dollars at getting everyone sorted out sooner rather than later.

It may be awhile before the full extent of the damages to area golf courses is fully known.

But it isn’t pretty. And some tracks will not open again this summer.

Kananaskis Country golf courses will not reopen this season after taking on large amounts of water.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce Kananaskis Country Golf Course is closed for the 2013,” general manager Darren Robinson wrote on the club’s Facebook page on Sunday night.

“While we cannot measure the damage until the waters of our rivers and creek beds receded, it will be some time before the courses (Mt. Kidd and Mt. Lorette) will be playable.”

Robinson announced full refunds will be given to all with a confirmed tee time.

While no official word has been levied on the 2013 fate of Inglewood Golf and Curling Club, Glencoe Golf and Country Club, Cottonwood Golf and Country Club, Redwood Meadows, Valley Ridge and McKenzie Meadows, each of those courses had pictures of extensive flooding posted on various social media sites.

“The Mighty Redwood is still standing, she is toughing it out,” tweeted Redwood Meadows golf (@redwoodpgapro) on Friday. But pictures of epic course damage were tweeted on the same account on the weekend.

Inglewood may have been the hardest hit; photos on the club’s facebook account showed rapids running over the ninth green, the 10th hole completely under water and the Bow flowing under the clubhouse stairs. It would seem like a long-shot for them to get open anytime soon.

"What we saw Friday, I guess, I didn't know what to expect," said the course's general manager Jason Stanier. "As we went out an assessed the back nine (Sunday), we were able to get out and look at the back nine, and for the most part it's intact."

The front nine, however, took on the brunt of the damage as Stanier said the No. 2 and No. 8 greens had large trees resting on them, and all of the trees lining the river on No. 9 fairway have all been washed away.

"Literally, the front nine became part of the (Bow River)," Stanier said, saying that his crew was hoping to assess the damage on the front today. "It was flowing just as fast as any parts of the river. It's hard to tell until we're out there if there's much. There might be a hole entirely gone, I'm not sure."

Stanier said the clubhouse, pro shop and maintenance building all took on some damage, but that all the water inside those buildings had receded and clean up had begun.

Members and staff of the club, Stanier said, are understandably saddened by the turn of events, but have offered their services to do whatever it takes to help the club get back on its feet.

Despite all that's taken place, Stanier remained light-hearted and positive about the course, which was first constructed in 1932. He says his team will do whatever it takes to give Calgary golfers a place to play as soon as they can. During the flood in 2005, the front nine also took on massive damage, but the entire course was able to get up and running in under three weeks.

"It is a possibility for our front nine," he admitted when asked if the club will shut down for the rest of the year. "But, I'm confident that we'll have nine holes, we might have 12 holes, we might have 16 holes at some point this year. I bet we have the back nine (ready) in a month. . . We're going to try and provide something for our members and our public players that want to play what's left."

McKenzie Meadows is in similar dire straits, with social media photos showing much of the course under water.

However, Blue Devil, situated just to the south in the lowlands of the Chaparral Valley, seems to have made out with more minor damage as this tweet sent out by “better off than many courses along the river.River must drop a few feet.We can get to work and have you swinging in no time.”

River Spirit took on some water but is pressing on, announcing on Saturday they were reopen on a modified 18.

The Golf Canada Calgary Centre was also affected by the flood over the weekend. The property contains arguably the city’s most popular driving range along with a Par 3 course and an 18-hole putting course. According to a release by Golf Canada on Friday, facility officials will wait until it is safe to get back on the premises to survey the damage. Updates on the centre can be found at golfcanadacentre.ca.

Calgary’s golf community has remained tight-knit, as some of the teaching professionals who give lessons out of the Calgary Golf Centre have been offered places to continue teaching at other golf courses and driving ranges around the city.

Good to see a golfer supporting a cause which isn't limited to kids or the military. Seems like they're usually the only groups that the PGA Tour deems worthy of support.

Yup the situation is terrible in Calgary, the brand new ~$7mil redesign of the glencoe forest is underwater, Kananaskis may never open again if the dam upstream is not repaired, I'm just thankful my course, Heritage Pointe, about 5-10km west of Cottonwood was not damaged.
