San Diego golf August 19-20? Out of towner looking for suggestions

Hello all,

I'm heading to San Diego for a conference on Sat, Aug 17th and leave Wed, Aug 21st. I'm taking my wife & 4 year old daughter with me, so Sunday will be Sea World day.

This will be my first trip to San Diego, thus my first time playing golf there as well. I'm looking to play in the afternoon of Mon, Aug 19th or Tues, Aug 20th. I'm looking for suggestions as to where I should play. I'm 32 years old & a 3-4 handicap. We're staying at the San Diego Marriott Marquis & Marina. I'll be playing as a single, so if anyone wants to meetup to play, I'd be up for that as well. I'm a member at a nice private club in Edmond, OK (Oak Tree CC)...so maybe they could make a phone call to get me on a private club if there's one that everyone suggests on here.

Thanks for reading and I look forward to thoughts/opinions.

For Public courses, depending on your budget, here are a few choices:

Barona
Aviara
Torrey Pines North or South
Steele Canyon

If your club can hook you up, you could try The Bridges, Fairbanks Ranch or The Farms.

Greenskeeper.org is a great site to check out: http://greenskeeper.org/southern_california/golf_courses/?dMap=8

Let me know where you decide to play and I may be able to join you.

Mike,

Thanks for the response.

I don't plan on getting a rental car, so distance from my hotel to the course might be something I'd consider as well.

As for the public courses, will getting on as a single be difficult on a Mon or Tues afternoon? Maybe if I meet up with you or someone else, they'd know the best way to make a tee time???

Getting on during on monday or tuesday should be pretty easy, depending on where you're going. The closest courses to your hotel are probably Riverwalk GC and Coronado GC, which is across the water from your hotel.

I would suggest Balboa
Close to Hotel
Low rates
Good conditions
Short yet fairly challenging course
A good mix of elevated tee boxes and elevated greens

I would definitely join you if I were still a local, but as of tomorrow I am not

Coronado is flat and boring IMO
Never played Barona but seems top notch $$$$
And obviously Torrey if you want fork out the non resident rate $$$$$

Taking into consideration your limited availability to car accommodations your top three bets are Balboa, Coronado and Riverwalk. If you had to choose from those three go for Balboa and Coronado with Balboa being about a 10$ cab ride from where your staying and Coronado being around 20$. Riverwalk is a nice track but overpriced. Deals can be had on Golfnow for Riverwalk.

Shoot I'd be down to play although I'm not quite at your level (11 handicap) and heck I wouldn't even mind giving you a ride. There are a lot of fun courses here if you can get on a private course I second The Bridges or The Farms. As far as public Riverwalk is across the street from my house and its pretty fun but short and flat, the greens are usually real nice but its over priced unless you go out for twilight. Balboa is OK in my opinion and without a residency card not worth the price. Torrey Pines is fantastic but yet again its crazy prices without a residency card. PM me if you have any questions or are serious about meeting up with someone down here.

Since you are going to be in SD, you have to play Torrey. South is harder, and the pros play that side. In my opinion, the North is more scenic and is a better experiece for first time golfers. Riverwalk is Ok as well. You can usually get on as a single pretty easily on a Mon. or Tues. at Torrey. You can get cheaper tee times for Riverwalk online.

Just remembered about this thread a little while ago as I was thinking about this upcoming trip.

My wife isn't too excited about my taking the sticks on this short trip but I would really like to play Torrey South. I told her that I'd try to get on as early as possible on Mon or Tues morning, so that I could get done & back sooner.

How far is Torrey from my hotel? Can a single just walkup early that am & get on? If so, what time should I arrive?

Thanks!

-Jordan, I'll shoot you a PM

It's low season, so you should find deals on golf now.

It isn't low season at all - this is high season. All the tourist areas are pretty busy, and hotel occupancy rates are very high right now. In addition to all the normal schools-out-tourist visitors from around the country (and other countries too) we have a very large number of "Zonies" escaping from the Arizona heat and the ponies are also running at Del Mar, adding even more to the influx of tourists. No, this is truly our high season, but the good thing is we don't really have seasonal golf rates at any courses like they do in places like Palm Springs where tee times are jacked way up during peak season.

Torrey is about 20 minutes from your hotel, and if you're going in the early morning you'll be against traffic for most of the way getting out of downtown from your hotel. You really shouldn't have a problem getting out as a single on a weekday morning, and I'd be surprised if you had to wait more than 30 minutes even though you'll be here at the peak of tourist season. The last time I played Torrey a few weeks ago I walked up as a single and it was too quick - I didn't have a chance to warm up or practice putting at all. I usually show up around 8 to 8:30am, get out pretty quick, and am done by about 1 to 1:30pm.
If you get there by 6am you should be out playing before 7am with a four hour round. I just looked at their calendar, nothing going on Mon. morning and on Tues. the Ladies club have the North course all morning. So Mon. would probably be easier, more available tee spots for both courses. Have a good time!
