Always wanted to know. Are you SOL when it comes to taking clubs on travel through an Airline if they are lost, stolen, or damaged? I know they have limited liability but, I'm sure the claim process probably doesn't make it worth it.

Most airlines treat golf clubs like all other checked baggage PROVIDED THAT you use an authorized container, e.g. hard case, Club Glove. Therefore, if they lose your bag or if you can prove damage, you should have a viable claim. Each airline has slightly different rules, so be sure to ask when checking your bag. Also, unless you sign some sort of release, you have a good argument that your lost golf bag should be treated like all other lost luggage.

 

I would be interested to hear from those that have actually placed claims.

I have never had any problems with my bag, but always wondered the same. I have had claims on lost luggage and they do it by weight. So you would never get you money back from lost clubs and that is scary with what you can have invested in a full set of clubs and gear.

Airlines usally cover lost golf clubs to the tune of about $2000 on average. Moral of the story...use your cheaper set to travel with, and hope they get lost!

You want to check with the airline before traveling with your clubs, some have different policies. Some will not insure any soft sided bag, including Club Gloves.

 

I know a guy at my club that someone walked in off the street while he was making his way to baggage claim, signed for and stole his clubs. I believe NorthWest only gave him $1500.00 toward the claim. For most of us on this site that does not begin to cover our equipment costs.

 

When I travel with my family I will UPS or Fed Ex my clubs to my destination. I place them in a hard case and ship them either to my hotel or home that I am stating at. Then i will have the hotel concierge reship them when I leave.

 

It is a scary proposition when traveling with clubs, you want your stuff to play with, but it has become quite a risk these days.
