When to get fit

Good evening. I have a question I hope you can answer or help me with. Next year I am going to be in the market for new equipment. I live on the east coast where the earliest outside fitting would be somewhere in April at which time I would take a regular flex. Fast forward to August after I have played 20 or so rounds plus range sessions and my flex would be a stiff. Any recommendations? I know the distance vs accuracy concept but that does not always help!

I hate to preach what has already been said on here a trillion times but go get fit, even at the pga store anywhere. Golfwrx members are good but noone can REALLY properly fit you online. Best of luck!

flex is only one facet of club fitting. The are other more important factors you could deal with in the meantime - indoors if necessary.

The first two are right. Club fitting is actually quite involved, but done properly, should improve your game. Best golf book I've ever read is Tom Wishon's, The Search for the Perfect Club. While you're wintering over, see if you can find it on Amazon. Well written, entertaining and very informative.

I actually went through two fittings this week. One at a 'premium' location that I paid for and one at the PGA superstore. The great thing is both places agreed that I was the same setup (Ping black dot off the shelf). The difference was that the premium place insisted I needed new shafts for me new irons at around $475. After looking at the data from both places, i hit the same style and proudced the same numbers with the stock shafts.

I am about an 18 HDCP playing some really badly fit clubs for me. By getting fit for the Pings, I gained 2 club lengths and my dispersion pattern was very very tight.

Go get fit in the least. It's 100% worth it to see the data.

I'll second that you should grab a copy of Tom Wishon's book. I know there is a "New" Search for the perfect club and I do not know what changes were made. Not only will you be better prepared for a fitting, you will understand the value provided by each aspect of the clubs and where the "bang for your buck" might be based on what your goals are.

In addition to the other good advice, I'll just add the following.

April might not be the right time but it certainly shouldn't take you until August to the point of being ready. That or just plan on taking some time at some indoor facility to start getting ready before the season opens. A good quality fitter can compensate for variations in swing speed and even shot quality as the year progresses but fitting usually requires hitting a lot of balls so you don't want to be so out of shape you either hurt yourself or get fatigued too fast.
