If you don't mind a 15 minute drive, my favorite public course in St. Louis is Tapawingo. 27 holes.

Aberdeen, Pevely Farms, Crescent Farms are all off Long Road in Eureka on 44. Birch Creek is off 44 at the Union exit. Wolf Hollow is at the Washington exit (about 5-6 miles from 44) on 44.

Aberdeen is always in great condition and can be very challenging despite its looks. $59/under for weekend round.

Hardest Holes: 9, 18, 4

[u]Crescent[/u]

Crescent is a layout unlike most of the public courses in St. Louis (flat, trees, doglegs) and has Bermuda fairways and rough. Both the two back tees play over par. I have never played the blacks, but they look as challenging as any I have seen at other courses. Greens tend to be bouncy and slow. $45/under for a weekend round

Pevely is what I would call the signature course of the terrain for the area. Lots of elevation change (not as much as Missouri Bluffs) where a flat lie is a premium. For the terrain it is always in excellent shape. Slow greens compared to some others. $65/under for a weekend round

Easiest Holes: 1, 3

Birch Creek is a nice "value course" during the fall and spring. Because of the summers being hot and dry and their lack of watering faces you with hitting very tight pitch and chips from the rough in the summer. The fairways are in good shape and so are the greens (not even close to what they were 2-3 years ago when they were lost). The greens roll just about perfect speed now (probably between 9-11). The course plays to 6500-6600 from the blues (men's tees), but is primarily from long par 3's and par 5's. There are only 2-3 holes from that tee box that approach or exceed 400yds. The gold's play to just under 7k and will give you some 230yd Par 3's to deal with as well as 560yd par 5's with elevation. $45/under for a weekend round

Wolf Hollow is a great place to play and practice if you want to learn green reading and strategy. The course is cut out of a bad stretch of land that makes it a "target golf" experience due to the elevation changes. The greens have a ton of break in them and the short holes all have severe dog legs requiring you to visualize both shots in and play the right amount of break on putts. You want to be below the hole here on most holes. They keep the rough up enough that if you hit it in the rough you may be faced with wondering how the ball will come out on your 90yd wedge to a downhill green that has a drop off on the pin side..... see where I am going? The course is short, but can play much longer because of elevation and the stresses of hitting a ball to a location to stay on the fairway or set up another shot. If you don't read break well and putt everything out you may 4 putt a hole while there for the first time. $35/under for a weekend round
