Daily Fee here... Our local private club is now down from a high of $35k to $10k to join and a reasonable $350/mo membership, but I'd feel like I had to play that course exclusively to get my money's worth. I'd rather play more courses and get the occasional invite to the private club... IMO, 3 of our public courses are as good as or better than our private course anyway. I like the larger variety of people I find at the public courses too...

I'm a member of a private club. It is a "working man's" golf club. 500 initiation; 100 a month. It is a nice club more a golf club than a country club. The grill serves good burgers and cold beer.

That's about all any hard working golf addict needs. A decent course a place to hit balls, eat a good burger and drink a cold one or two every now and then.

Public or muni courses...no money for a monthly fee or initial sign up fee.

Our muni's here are usually in excellent shape...and walking at our muni's it is never more than $20 at peak times, twilight (when I usually play) is $11/$13 walking for 18 weekdays/weekends.

I have played a few private / club courses (via invite) and enjoyed the experience, but I generally enjoy the people that I meet on the public courses and thus that is an attraction to the public courses for me.

Member at a local muni. Donald Ross design, a half mile from the house, and except for not having any water hazards, it has every possible shot one can imagine on a golf course. $700 a year for an in-city single, $800 outside city.

Not only is it a great deal, I'd gladly pay more. It stinks having to pay for a full round and only getting a few holes in. If I pay for 18, it chaps my hide to NOT get 18 (whoa, that doesn't sound right) ;)

I've been looking around at joining a club after 3 years of itinerant wanderings on public courses or as a guest of a member but I've been having some issues.

Playing the same course time after time is one issue, but mainly I can't seem to justify the joining fee to myself. It's not an admin fee, is it just some form of costly authorisation to keep the hoi polloi out? I'm in a position that I can afford most of the joining fees for clubs in my area but as it's Wimbledon in the UK there are always going to be a few clubs that are too rich for my blood. Paying yearly subs, no problem. Paying just for the pleasure of breathing the same air as other members, WTF?!

And there are quite a few good public courses around here so that's where I'll probably stay.

Public course player. As has been previously stated.....There are so many great courses to play here on Long Island, NY, it would not be in my best interest to be anchored to one course. ;)

Private Club - 1.5 miles from my house, great practice area with heated tees during the winter. $2,800 a year and no monthly dues. The best is 4 hour rounds ;)

I would pay almost that much for 4 hour rounds! My course has brutal pace of play sometimes. In peak season 5 - 6 hour rounds are not uncommon!!!

One time I played a round with my dad (who only gets to golf a few times per year) and we quit after 5 hours... heres the catch.. WE WERE ONLY ON THE 11TH HOLE!!! That's right, ELEVEN holes of golf in FIVE HOURS!!! He demanded his money back and has never returned in over 2 years.

I have a jr. membership, pub course.. $530 cdn per year.. play is restricted on weekends and holidays to after 2pm.

Private clubs, like everything else, are pretty affordable here in my part of Texas. I am a member of a private club here in town, but play alot of business golf on the local public courses.

The main thing when joining a country club is finding a course that doesn't bore you. I feel like I could play my home course everyday and never get bored.

Of course, being in DFW, I'm lucky to have so many good public courses to choose from on the occasions that I want something different.

I am a member or a private club. Many of you like playing various courses and this is a reason not to join a private club. My club has gotten around this problem by having reciprocal rights on Sunday afternoons and Mondays to 3 other private clubs ranging from 30 - 60 minutes away. Great way to play other courses and meet new people.

actually, two private equity clubs... one where I live and another where we go many weekends that's sort of an eventual retirement/investment real estate deal.

Having played muni's and daily fees for years, I found that when I finally could afford to, joining a good local club was so much better.

I looked for courses that would be in good shape -- not overplayed. The courses had to offer a fairly large group of good golfers so there was always a game. I wanted to be able to walk and if need be, play in four hours on most days. And I wanted a place with a membership that cared more for the game and understood a sense of decorum.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
