New Stand Bag

Recommended Posts

I currently have 2 bags, a Callaway Ultralight 3.8 Stand and Great Divider Maverick. The callaway is horrible on a cart and doesn't easily fit all my clubs, and there is no way I would carry the Maverick as it's huge and heavy. I'm looking for a new stand bag, one that can do double duty both carry and cart equally well. I want some form of club organization as I hate having to wrestle my clubs in and out of the golf bag.

It also has to have enough room to carry the essentials (dozen balls, a few gloves, cell phone, sunglasses, range finder, a wind shirt, etc.)

I think I have it narrowed down too two. The Ogio Grom and the Sun Mountain MPB. I really like the Woode System as it fits my setup perfect but a external putter tube would be great for when it's on the cart. The Sun mountain MPB looks nice but seems a bit heavy and has that cheesy padded section over the top of the legs.

Other bags I looked at but didn't like was the PING Hoofer Vantage (legs seemed flimsy), Nike SasQuatch Tour Stand Bag (too $$$ and no dedicated putter port), Mizuno Twister Stand Bags (Kabuki Organizer just seemed strange)

Thanks for your input.

I have the Ogio Grom and love it!

I love the pocket setup and overall look.

Only complaint is that the stand is a little wobley.

This bag is definately worth the money.

Thanks for the info. I do have a question, how well does the Woode system work with you clubs where the shaft is on the wrong side of the head? :drinks: Sorry, couldn't resist the lefty joke.

I am a huge fan of the Ping Hoofer bags. They are ultralight. Full of features. And most importantly, pretty affordable. During the summer, I pretty much carry every day. Over the past few years, I have gone through many cheap bags only having to buy a new one at the end of the year.

A Tommy Armour one I had actually had so thin padding that it grounded out divots in every single one of my graphite shafts on my Hogans. Financially, it costs way more to buy many quick fix el cheapo bags than to make a good investmest in a high-middle to top of the line bag.

Anything Ogio is also probably a good bet. The technology in some of the bags is a little bit screwy. Unfortunately, Al Cervik's television-radio-keg-automatic club dispenser bag has never been made available to the public.

It's a shame.

I have a 07 Ogio Grom, it is a little heavy as a carry bag, but not horrible. I carry, Driver, 3-wood, 5-wood, hybrid, 4-PW, 56 & 60 deg wedge, and an Odyssey 2 ball srt putter and it fits everything perfectly.

On an riding cart it's great the torque strap really works. On a push/pull cart it's horrible (at least with a bag boy LT-440). The Grom is inch or two too short to fit fully into the top cradle making it rotate really easily, unfortunately I haven't figured a way to use the torque strap with LT-440.

You're not going to want to carry the MPB much further than from your car to the range. It's really a cart bag with some carry features, but it would be a heavy lug for even 9-holes.

I've got the Ogio Vaporlite and it's okay, but I do have a problem with the legs and base. I play on the coast and it's often windy and the base is just not very stable. Even on flat ground, the small breeze will blow the thing over. And balancing the bag on a hillside is near impossible.

You might want to take a look at some of Callaway's new bags - their base sits flat on the ground. Like the XTT or the Terra Firma.

i own a MPB and recommend it. i had an ogio vaporlite before that and it was definitely easier to carry and lighter. with the vaporlite, i'd usually sling the bag over one shoulder without a problem. carrying the MPB isn't a problem either, but i use two shoulders to carry it. play 18 w/ it no problem, with no differences in fatigue. takes about an extra 10 seconds to sling it over your two shoulders. if that's a problem for you, then a lighter bag would probably be a better idea. i also experienced problems with the vaporlite legs. the MPB legs are nice and sturdy and i haven't had a problem with it since i bought it.

Just retired my Sun Mountain MPB due to excessive wear after one season. A very nice bag but some design flaws related to its purported cart bag capability (i.e., it's better as a stand bag). This was my second SM bag--both were well cared for but did not last. I'm anxiously awaiting my Ogio Edge. Ogios feel very 'stout' and I like the feature and design of the club divider (Woode).

Another vote for the '07 edge. It is the best bag I have used to date. Legs are sturdy and the woode system is fantastic. Lots of pockets and very durable. You won't be disappointed!

Ths is a followup to my earlier post. Just received my Ogio Edge--nice bag for stand/carry. But I think there are some serious design flaws to this and other bags that claim to serve dual duty as a cart bag. For starters, there's a TORQ strap that is supposed to stabilize the bag while on a cart. This strap is positioned on the leg side of the bag, meaning that to use it all of the pocket openings would be inaccessible. Also, the putter well would be in the back--this seems counterintuitive. (on a cart--understand that as a stand bag this won't matter). Am I missing something? Does anyone know of a bag that is good both ways? It's probably better to have one good stand bag and one good cart bag and to forget about achieving hybrid bag nirvana.

Where else would you put the strap? The ball pocket side? Never had a problem with getting to the pockets or the putter when I used it. If you want access to the big garment pocket then put your bag on the right side.

I don't get this either??? The torque strap is in the only place it should be; the side of the bag where the bag can strap to the cart. None of the pockets are blocked and I don't have trouble getting to any of them. What kind of cart are you attaching your bag to? The putter well is in the exact spot it should be, on the side of the bag that is closest to the back side of the cart. Anywhere else would be counterproductive as this is the club that is pulled out of the bag the most often. I think you got the torque strap confused. It attaches to the back of the cart, not the cart strap that goes around the bag. I think you will realize it's purpose once you actually use the bag on a cart.

This is the ultimate hybrid bag and I love it for walking or riding, and I am not saying this with biased feelings because I own the bag. The torque strap is genius and holds the bag to the cart without the strap the cart provides. It has numerous storage space and every feature imaginable in a carry/cart bag.

I just got my Ogio Edge a few weeks ago after many months of contemplating which bag to get. I walk 50% of the time and also use a Rickshaw on my home course. One thing no one mentions is if you use a Rickshaw, the torq strap works perfectly for this. In fact, it may be the only stand bag that actually stays on a Rickshaw without sliding around. I have also walked 9 holes a few times with it and it didn't seem any heavier than my 3 year old Sun Mountain bag.

Very happy with the bag and it is perfect for what I was looking for. I got a 2006 model on ebay for half the price of a 2007 model and I believe they are identical bags.
