Vintage persimmon find. I have no clue who makes them. Help identify.

LOL Sorry, couldn't resist. Persimmon is a type of wood.

LMAO!!!! I even have to laugh at that. I honestly had no idea. I am 32 so its a lil before my time.

Lol thanks for the response tho!!

No problem. I was just thinking, I'll bet the majority of posters here haven't ever used a wooden wood. How would you know?

Cheers for taking my dorky post in the spirit intended!

Seeing as I think you're the oldest & most experienced guy in the thread Kevin ... :)

Why were "woods" always made from Persimmon?

The laminates were always always Maple ... baseball bats are almost always Ash ... how did they decide on Persimmon for golf woods, even though after the 30's, there was an "insert" that actually hit the ball.

Great question Brian, and I don't know the answer. I can tell you how selecting your equipment was different. No two clubs were alike, and finding just the right one was a quest. Once you found it, you wouldn't change. If something happened to it, it couldn't be replaced. It was truly an art...

If you were a "player" in the 70's and early 80's, you used a persimmon driver from the 50's and 60's.

Hi Guys, sorry for the "Late" Pick Up on all of this.. This subject interests me greatly as a "Traditional Club Maker" In Australia.. All through "Clubmaking" fruit tree timbers have been used.. They started with "Hawthorn" (the Troon Clubs are made of H.thorn) "Blackthorn" (wild prunus /plum) "Apple" " Pear" by the 1860's clubmakers started using "Persimmon" (also a fruit tree timber) as they could get good quantities out of USA. Fruit tree timber is "Not too Hard" Not too Soft" and has a stringy grain which helps to prevent it from splitting. Of course the early clubs out of Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Pear etc, were all "Long Nose" clubs, IE the typical dimensions were 5" long, 2" wide, 1" deep. To get a Long head not to split, they used the "Natural Curve" of a tree, eg, where the tree grows out of the ground (Partial root) or a naturally bent limb. Of course the "Long Nose" Clubs were used for playing the "Feathery" Golf Ball, which was 'kind" to that shape of club.. The club was also kind to the ball. (hence mostly woods in that era, irons tended to cut the leather case of a Feathery) The Gutta Percha Ball was invented in 1848 and changed all that. The Gutta Percha Ball was as hard as a rock and smashed their beloved "Long Nose" woods, so from the 1860's onward they sought to change the shape of the clubhead. By the 1880's the "Transitional Head" (shorter and broarder) was being used, and by the 1890's the "Bulger" head was in play. With the change to the Bulger head, there was no longer a need for that "Natural Curve' in the neck, they could obtain "strength" by sawing the blocks on an "angle" so that the Grain of the wood ran approximately in the direction or plane of the neck.. Hope these ramblings from an "Old Ecentric" help :) Ross Baker

I started out with persimmons and laminates as that's all they had then. First set was a Bobby Jones, later I had several Tourneys, and last wooden head was a Titleist Persimmon Driver given to me by Scotty Cameron which I sold to a collector in England. The only Persimmon I have left is a 4W made by Prima. The first metal head I recall is the Pittsburgh Persimmon but I am sure there were plenty of others around. I also had a Titleist Howitzer which had a behemoth of a head, next from Titleist was the 976R Titanium with the barber pole head cover and IMO one of the finest they made up until recently.

LOL

You are a Dinosaur. Me too!

Funny you bring up the 976R. I just bought 5 of them on eBay, along with 3 975Ds. I'm going back to the smaller head when I can start playing golf again. The big heads are longer, straighter, and more forgiving, but other than that... :D Seriously, I can't stand to look at them anymore. It's forged 714MBs, and 976R, 970 3&5, and I'm a happy dude. My one modern treat is the Futura X putter, and maybe even the counterbalanced model.

Cheers,
Kevin

yup....I no longer play forged blades, opting to give the hybrids a whirl, but really do like smaller heads on drivers. The first 460cc driver I tried was an Adams Tight Lies. I hated it! big pop up, tinny sound. I then got the Adams Speedline which was much better, but still just looked weird to me. Settled on TM R7 limited and am quite happy with it, but just got an older TM Bubble Super Steel as an alternate. Putter of choice is an old Northwestern Tom Weiskopf 313 although I also have a Cleveland Classic Belly and an Oddysee Metal-X 7 Belly neither of which I anchor. One set of irons that I used to own and now regret selling were my Titleist DCI Blacks with Rifle shafts.
