I don't have a name for you, but in half a dozen rounds I have never had a poor caddy at the Straits or the Irish. I've learned, the hard way, to heed advice on how much to club up/down for the wind.

While they will not rush you they also will not let you dawdle. They are docked a substantial amount of their pay if you don't finish your round in a prescribed amount of time.

Can't agree more. You will not have a poor caddy at Kohler. I have played over 20 times there, and while I have had some less than stellar caddies, none did anything horrible. With that being said, the two best caddies I have had are Tom and Jack. If there are more than one of each, they may ask who you are referring to. If that is the case, Tom has longer blonde hair and spends the winters in Scottsdale, while Jack is an older gentlemen who lives in Wisconsin and has spent 15+ years there. Both of those descriptions should clarify if they have multiple Tom's or Jack's.

I think you are right about the caddies being great for the most part. However, I played the Irish and the Straights courses in 2011. I had the same caddy for both rounds(he requested me for the Straights). Although he was a nice guy, he was a horrible caddy. He was a young kid trying to impress and for that reason I wasn't hard on him. I found most of the tee shots that strayed off line. He only had my bag for the Irish, but he had 2nd bag for the Straits. The 2nd guy was almost ready to tell him to leave at 1 point. I do realize it is my fault for not saying something, but I didn't want to ruin what was a great day of golf.

The reason why I think you are right about the caddies being great is that the 2nd caddy in both of my groups was fantastic. I just happened to get stuck with a not so great caddy.

I had Brent on the Straits course and he was solid. He wouldn't be for everyone though. He can come across like a young, arrogant, ****head.... but I have some very similar personality traits to him so it worked out quite well. He may have been playing towards my personality as much as I was feeding to his. I actually really enjoyed the day with him (as did my father). He def. knew the course and you could tell he was very good player in his own right. He kept me loose, made some funny comment (which is the arrogant, ****head, side that I felt was funny and kept me loose but could see how some people may not like that).

On the Irish course I had a caddy named Lyle (I think it was Lyle, could have been Kyle though). He was awesome. He was very laid back. Had a west coast way about him. He kept everyone in the group loose. I told him to take control of my decision making to make sure I was playing the course right. I shot 77 and never questioned him when he was handing me a 5 iron to tee off with on certain holes. He knew his stuff, knew the course and very quickly picked up on my game. Once or twice he had a miss read (which every caddy will have) and he immediately admitted fault on it. I respect that from a caddy. If I went back I would try and get him for both rounds.

At Blackwolf we didn't use caddies. Quite honestly, you don't caddies there. I would just grab a cart and a rangefinder/GPS. For the most part the course is in front of you. I think I shot 82 there and remember thinking it was above 80 because I hit some poorly executed shots and had a couple of bad missed putts (5 footers). Not because I had a lack of course knowledge. Erin Hills (even though not in Kohler), the Straits course and the Irish course, I found a caddy was very useful. BWR seemed like it would be money that wasn't needed to be spent.

Last summer we had a pair of brothers on the Straits - Trevor was one, the other's name fails me. Good guys who we would gladly request again on a future visit.

While I probably wouldn't walk Blackwolf River, I wish we had at least taken a forecaddie. There were a few hazards, etc. that we didn't realize were there until it was too late...

Matty and Shannon are awesome

Have used them for many years - they are the best out there for the Black Wolf courses where they spend most of their time. They also do a great job at Whistling

Very knowledgable and fun to hang out with.

Thanks for all the advice guys. Looking to call the caddymaster soon so a few questions.

Do the caddies double bag like at Pebble and Pinehurst? I have a feeling they don't at Kohler...

For MFlores (most recent post). Is Shannon a woman? My wife is a solid 10 index and hasn't had a woman caddy for her yet on her travels. Sounds a good chance for her to try one.

Re: Tom and Jack, i think I have enough info to describe them to the caddymaster but Snkstaff if you had any more info about Willie, that would be helpful.

We are taking caddies at irish and straits and aforecaddie at BWR.

It depends on how busy the day is and when you play. For example, on my three trips to the straits, I went two of the times early in the season during caddy training. At that time, they try to get every caddy out each day so odds are you will have your own. As for peak season, I wouldn't plan on having your own, but if the day is slow you may get lucky.

Hello fellow WRXers.

Heading to Kohler to play Black Wolf Run, Whistling Straits and the Irish in 3 weeks.

Looking for any caddy recommendations that you may have.

Thanks

Have played the Straits twice. Both caddies were awesome. I dont remember my first caddy's name, but this last trip I had Ray Trout and would highly recommend him.

They do carry 2 bags each at least when I go there. (I was just there last weekend). We played the straits and they each took 2 bags. They fore caddied river and meadows for us.

Shannon is a women. Cute blonde but an awesome caddy - double bonus!!!

They are WI natives and winter in Scottsdale.

If you ever make it to Erin Hills - ask for Austin. Fantastic caddy, Wisconsin native and a good player to boot. As others have said though - you really can't go wrong with any of the caddies at Whistling.

Hello again. We arrived in Kohler today but were rained out ¥¥¥.

Earlier this week, we played Erin Hills and had an excellent looper named Chase Dirksen. Chase was a great caddy from all perspectives and I would highly recommend him to anyone who has the opportunity to get to Erin Hills.

Indcidentally, everything about Erin Hills - accommodation, restaurant, pub, practice and most importantly the golf course were A++

In Milwaukee waiting to to fly home...

We went with Shannon for Straits and River. Solid caddy, very good with my wife. very helpful to me on Straits when we played in dense fog.

she knows River like the back of her hand.

She was off today so we were assigned Donnovan, a great guy from Jamaica, for the Irish. Very experienced caddy with a very relaxed personality.
