X-20 Tour vs Razr X Tour

Hey all,

I've got a dilemma on my hands. Without knowing anything about my golf game and what would suit me best, should I go with Callaway X-20 tour 3-PW with Flighted Project X 6.0 or Callaway Razr X Tour 4-PW with DG S300? Both of them are the same price for me. Both are screaming deals, but the X-20's are in overall better shape. I love the way the Razr X look, but everything is pointing to the X-20 for me. I've hit the X-22 Tour before and absolutely loved that iron. If anyone has experience with either, feel free to chime in! Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Can't go wrong with either. I've had the x-22 tour and Razr X tour - preferred the rifle Flighted shafts. The DGS300 shafts are parallel tip and just seem too stiff vs taper tips. Might just be in my head, but I never got comfortable with them. So all I'm saying, is maybe the shafts are a decision point. Good luck!

If your playing the jpx 850 already both are a significant downgrade, the x20 tours are legit but not over the 850s with ctapers. If your playing the clubs in your sig, then those iron options do not make sense. Are these for a backup set?

Yeah, these are going to be a backup set for the impending doom that is coming in October. In October, I have to give back my 850's to Mizuno. I'm leasing them for the year.

Can't speak for the x-20's but been playing the RazrX tours for several years now. Very solid, good performing head. For me, they were better performing (and feeling) than any of the other comparable options at the time (i20's, 710 AP2's, JPX 800 pros, etc...). Probably one of the more overlooked irons at the time. The only potential downside is that they do seem to use a softer metal than most cast offering. This results in a great (softer) feel on contact but it also means they are not quite as durable. That could be one possible reason why they don't look to be in as good of shape. For my set, it's been nothing that has had any effect on the playability, just aesthetics.

I didn't like the X-20 Tours at all - selling my set currently. In fact I really disliked them - felt really dead and didn't even perform, plus they were way too short heel to toe, just a stupid unbalanced design. Like you I was pumped up about them and read all the reviews, but what a let down. I'd pass on them for sure. In fact I don't know why you'd want to go Callaway at all from that era - big chunky soles, no feel.

Stick to Mizuno - go back to the JPX825 or JPX800, or if you can play them the JPX800 Pros.

But if it were me I'd get a set of Titleist AP1, any vintage, and put some really good shafts in them. I have Nippon 950GH shafts and with these they're far and away the best GI irons I've ever played for both performance and feel.

Don't know how big an 'era' you're referring to but in my opinion, the soles on the RazrX tours are anything but chunky. If anything, they're the opposite.

Of course, it's a completely subjective matter - so it's hardly surprising that one will see completely opposite opinions and neither is necessarily right or wrong.

Yes - the Razrs were different like you say. I was referring to the whole X-14 on era, 16, 18 etc. They had ridiculously low COG (see the MPF data) and a lot of metal in the bottom of the soles. I tried one or two and thought the feel was pretty dead.

Curiously Callaway moved entirely the other way with COG, the Apex being one of the highest around. Went from .63 in the X-16 to .86 in the Apex. That's nearly 6mm difference! That's a massive difference and a real design volte-face. The Razrs were somewhere in the middle of the turnaround with a pretty typical COG of .76.

I never actually tried any of the x-series irons. Before the Razr-X tours, the only callaway irons I tried were the fusions (didn't like the looks of the x-18's) and although they looked OK, I didn't care for the feel of the fusions. The Razr X tours were like night and day compared to my previous (very limited) experiences with Callaway irons. I was all set to dive into the 710 AP2's and only tried them on a whim - not really expecting much. But the rest, as they say, is history.
