First Attempt Iron "Re-Finish" Bead Blast MP-32 DIY

Good Morning,

With my time off around the holidays, I decided to attempt to refinish my irons I am building for next season. I found a set of MP-32's on BST that had good grooves, but were chattered up and had some rock dings. I researched here and decided to bead blast to get a satin finish on them. I really just used what I had available, so by no means am I an expert or would I say that this was the best way, but I think they turned out well and just wanted to share in case anyone else was wanting to try, but was scared to mess up their clubs.

I have never blasted anything before this, so I would say if you are handy at all you could do this yourself if you can find access to a blast cabinet.

I took 4-PW of the MP32s and 2 old Vokeys as practice clubs. When I checked the media in the cabinet, it looked like dirty glass beads so I proceeded with the test run. It knocked ALOT of material off of the wedges. I kept the nozzle atleast 6-12 in away at all times. When I inspected the media, turned out there was alot of old sand in the bottom of the hopper and it roughed them up pretty good. I drained the hopper and added the only glass media available 40-60 grit. I lightly sandblasted my 4 iron from 12-16 inches before I noticed the sand. I actually think it looks the best. I taped the face when doing this though.

Once the good media was in, it was a very quick and easy process. I held at approximately 4-6 inches and moved the nozzle around a good bit. Overall it was very easy. I am not sure of the pressure, but would guess around 80lbs. Then I paint filled in Auburn colors :haha:

I know this isn't the best how to, but I just wanted to share. Now if my SPB's will get here from Japan I will be in business!

Vokey that was sandbasted then beadblasted.

Nicely done! I did this to my MP-57s (discussed in this thread, relevant for anyone looking to blast cavity backs as opposed to blades).

Nice job! I'm assuming the media blast did not remove the heads finish completely, just roughed it up? Nice paintfill as well, the "Mizuno" blue looks stock to the MP-32 what did you use? Have you or anyone attempted to grind out the deeper scratches/dings themselves? If so what grinding wheels have you used?

Thanks! I actually found a navy nail polish that was almost perfect. I'm not sure what brand or anything but can share later if interested. I find nail polish to dry much quicker than other enamel and then I follow up with a few coats of clear. I've never had any trouble with it coming off.

It didn't remove any finish at all. Like you said, just kind of made it satin. I am planning on gaming these until they wear out so I didn't really try to remove all of the deeper dings/ rock gouges as there will be plenty more by the end of this season. I would think that if it is not through the chrome you could use a file or polishing wheel on a bench grinder but I'd be careful not to get through the chrome unless you were going for a raw finish.

I just did my Cally MB's but masked poorly and have shiny lines right near grooves. I am fixing as we speak but how did you mask the face?

I didn't mask the face. I just didn't direct the media at the grooves. It's not actually taking material so I don't think it hurts them anyway. You can still see the face has the slightly different finish from the toe/ heel . I'm at work but will see if I have a pic of the face.
