DIY Collars for Ferrules – Built set Titleist 718 Ap2 with Steelfiber i95’s - Lots of Pics

Most golf club component stores sell your standard “Black Collared Ferrules” for irons, hybrids or driver/adapters. The collars properly align and secure the shaft in the head and are highly recommended when installing graphite shafts to prevent the shafts from snapping on top of the hosel.

When I built my Titleist 714 AP2’s with Steelfiber i95’s, I had Cell Parts make me some custom white ferrules with 2 black rings, however, they did not have a collar. I had to make them using a technique member "Nessism" suggested by using a couple wraps of fiberglass drywall tape cut into a strip the same width as the collar with 2-3 wraps of the glass tape just under the ferrule, then epoxy everything together. It worked but took a lot of time.

I recently picked up a demo set of 718 Ap2’s didn’t like the shafts pulled the 9i-4i heads and installed them in my Steelfiber i95’s the other day. Wanted to use the same white ferrules to match all my clubs.

Rather than using the fiberglass wrap/tape again I came up with a new DIY fix that’s worth sharing with others.

Took a few old Taper Tip .355 ferrules and using a box cutter knife slowly cut off the top 3/16” ring, sanded down the OD slightly on the belt sander and it fit nice and snug into the head where the collar sits as well slightly in the bottom of the ferrule and it properly centered the shaft with a lot less effort.

The Titleist 718 Ap2 head weights are a few grams lighter than my 714’s, I was able to get them all to D3 S/W using tip weights and checked the loft & lie all were as per spec.

Took a bunch of pic’s of the process using the 8 iron for info purposes.

My Custom Ferrules from Cell Parts (Note No Collars)

Used some old ferrules & cut the top 3/16" ring off to make a collar

Sanded down the OD to fit into the hosel

Fits nice & snug and deeper than a normal collar

Added a tip weight to get my desired S/W

Completed 8 iron

D3 Swing Weight

Checked the Loft & Lie

Lie = 63.5* as per spec

Loft 38* = as per spec

Cleaned up the ferrule and apply a squirt of Acetone to finish

Gets you a High Gloss Finish

All done, off to the range for some further testing.

Nice trick.

I don’t think I’ll personally use it because I don’t like colored ferrules, but I do like your creativity figuring it out.

For those of you who build Titleist AP2’s, added a couple more pic’s and some interesting findings.

714 vs 718 Comparisons:

All the 718 heads were a few grams less in head weight, perhaps that’s why the set came D-0 S/W.

The 718 P/W , 9i & 8i heads all had approx. 3/8” less shaft insertion depth, the remainder of the heads were about the same as the 714’s.

718’s all had ½” collared ferrules.

Two heads (P/W & 9i ) had alum tip weights which registered < 0.5 gr on scale

714 P/W shaft insertion.

Same shaft in 718 P/W head

Only 1 1/8” deep

Insertion into 714 head - difference was significant

my english was so poor here I erase the comment- insomnia.... ughh. Thanks for all the tips though! gonna try out as soon as I can find some shafts I like better for my irons!

In response to your Q .... no, I haven't taken apart a Golfworks ferrule for this purpose. The ferrules shown in my story were sourced from Julianna at Cell Parts ...... [https://cell-parts.net/](https://www.cell-parts.net/ "https://cell-parts.net/") . I needed a bunch of custom ferrules for a new build I was doing this past spring and Julianna sold me just the **"1/8" Rings"** that I needed to use for the "Collars". I was surprised when she told me other club builders have been buying just the rings from her for sometime now & using them as collars in other mfg's heads, some heads have different I.D and are deeper than others ... say Titleist heads that use 1/8" colars.

In the pic below Julianna sent me some 1/8" and 3/16" as samples, the 3/16" needed to be sanded down significantly while the 1/8" insert depth fit really nice.
