Lower Lofts...helping game?

Over the past year I have gotten more serious about my golf game. Got fit for Driver/3W/Putter/Wedges? did shaft optimizer...didnt do irons because I am still on a budget and went with lessons instead.

Through lessons I have been told that I have a mid release...with a tendency to me slightly early release. I hit the ball pretty high with irons..this got me to think I play W/S FG Tour F5 irons which are "traditionally lofted" 47* PW/ 35* 7 iron

I don't feel like i need distance per se...150 club is 9 iron...6 iron 180 etc

My question..would switching to more "strong" lofted irons actually help my tendency to launch high/pick up more distance?

If distance isn't the issue, Is the higher launch actually causing any problems? Let's make sure there is an actual problem that needs to be fixed before making any changes (particularly if money is a concern). Higher launch can also mean better distance control (better stopping power on approach shots to the green). And managing launch/spin in irons is generally about finding the best balance between distance vs distance control for the individual.

But generally yes, adjusting loft is usually a moderately effective way to manage launch/spin. Typically more effective at least than many other equipment "fixes" (e.g. trying to manage launch/spin through the shaft profile changes). It may not be enough to completely compensate for a swing issue - but it certainly can help some IF it really is problematic.

Yea i hear you. I am not sure i have an actual "problem" i dont hit my irons exactly how i want...working on that through lessons.

I was just thinking that if i have a tendency to early release and add loft..would i benefit from playing stronger lofted irons...what would happen to spin or are the two unrelated?

Thank you again

There are many things worse than hitting your irons high. When I was in high school my golf coach told me I hit my irons too high even though I was fairly consistent with plenty of yardage. He just thought it was too high. So, being the contentious student I started working really hard on hitting my irons lower. The old man that owned and operated the range came out and watched me for a while and asked me what I was doing. I told him what the coach told me. He thought it was the most ridiculous thing he had ever heard and that he wished he could hoist long irons like I did. I ignored him and continued to work on what the coach had told me to do. I had started playing golf the Summer after my sophomore year and qualified in the 6 spot my Junior for the golf team with my high ball flight. A year later I didn't qualify for the team at all as my scores had gotten consistently worse trying to not hit the ball so high. The coach didn't seem to care at all while my game was falling apart. I should have listened to the old man.

The moral of this story is, be careful of who you take advice from. Sometimes that even means not taking advice from yourself. Not all experts are experts. In my opinion a high ball flight helps more often than it hurts. However, I am no expert.
