Check out the Society of Hickory Golfers (hickorygolfers.com) for tournament, regional playing groups and great technical information. Just a warning, hickories can become really addictive!! Hope you enjoy them.

I'm heading to Washington, IL tomorrow for the first of 2 days of Hickory golf. Tomorrow, we're at Hillcrest in the afternoon for 12 holes of feathery golf and 9 holes of with a gutty ball (limited flight). Then Saturday, we're at Metamora Fields in the morning for 18 holes of gutty. We play from shorter tee-boxes to accommodate how far the balls travel and use sand instead of wooden tees.  It's a great time. You just have to adjust your golf expectations a bit. Many people dress for the period, but that's not a must. There are always extra sets of clubs around for newcomers. Below are pictures of the feathery balls we use which are made by one of the group members, my irons and a group shot. Sorry for the late notice, anyone down in the area who is interested, please message me. We also have a fall outing.

New book coming out later this year about British golf between 1864-1914. I haven't preordered it yet, but I am going to.

Sometimes you head down paths you didn't really plan.  I have a reasonable collection of hickories including a nice Tom Stewart set with the mashie niblick having his personal inspection mark.  Over the journey I had picked up a Maxwell mashie that I like playing with.  Sits really well.  I bought a set of clubs locally on eBay and I didn't really know what I had until they arrived.  Before and after photos below.  Lo and behold a few more Maxwells.  So suddenly I had a mid iron, mashie, mashie niblick and putter all Maxwells.  The odds of finding a lefty Maxwell niblick seemed pretty close to impossible but a few months later one turned up, if a little pricey, and suddenly I had a set of Maxwells.  A week or two ago I dropped a few of they off to a local restorer to get the shafts fixed and he hands me a little pile of lefty hickories that he wanted a home for.  Bingo, Maxwell driving iron and deep face mashie.  So hopefully in a couple of weeks I can get them all together and take them out for a game.

They do look great. As stated above make sure they are reglued and repinned.

You are more likely find good playable clubs through the network of historical guys than on eBay.

I would also get the lofts and SW checked. Personally, I prefer 5 degree loft differences in my hickory play sets. One tip, never bend a hickory club stronger as they will dig more. Maxwells are usually decent play clubs on modern courses as they usually have some bounce. If SW is a little low, lead tape is your friend.

Stewarts are great sets and very popular in the hickory fraternity. My favourite play sets are Stewarts and Jack Whites. I love trying out the old equipment and play over a hundred times a year with hickory.

Have fun with the Maxwells.

I am happy to work on the heads but when it comes to shafts I hand over to an expert.  The gentlemen doing the work on the hickories is the best there is, so yep they'll be reglued and repinned and because they are Maxwell's a dab of epoxy in the holes in the hosels to stop any moisture getting in.
