Tournament selection & misc - what age autonomy?

At what age did you or your kids take full control of their tournament schedule?

Right now I am still identifying tournaments for him and then asking him whether he'd like to compete in them, then doing all of the scheduling, coordinating (applications, etc) and, of course providing transportation and funding. The last two aspects will continue until he can drive himself and/or gets a job to pay for tournament fees, but what about all the other stuff - when can I expect that he would be able to be self-sufficient?

As long as your paying your going to be actively involved in selecting tournaments. Sure you get input from them but you sort have to decide how much your willing to travel and spend.

‘Generally speaking I narrow it down and let them select what ones they want to play. Never really too young either to get their input which is what I think you are actually asking. I think once you travel a bit played a variety of tournaments you can start asking them what tournaments they liked better. My guess this around 12 or 13 for most kids. But since you are probably funding it and taking off time they will need your approval. You also can’t expect a kid to work and pay tournament fees either and actually compete on any serious level.

Don’t ever expect you kids golfing career to not need help even if they turn pro the will need you for something.
