What gets the hands and the club above the trail shoulder at the top of the backswing? It looks to me like if the golfer just turns on the backswing the club would follow the shaft plane to the top. How does get it on or above the shoulder plane? Is this important? How would you learn to do this?

expanation: I'm working with a local instructor and in looking at video, I've probably always stayed somewhere around the shaft plane It seems that earlier on I worked so hard at coming from the inside that on the downswing I then get the club lower putting it under the plane and coming from too inside which leads to all kinds of bad shots - fat, thin, hooks, pushes, slices etc. For several months, he has had me working on making a steeper shoulder turn and making sure I don't get the club too deep what I think of as "behind me." The main drill has been making backswings with my rear against a wall, and the wall doesn't allow the club to get behind me.

I've done this hundreds of times and duplicated the feel in practice. When I actually hit balls, the arms, hands and club drop back down below the trail shoulder. Do the arms need to lift? Is it more about getting the shoulders turning steeper on the backswing?

I'd really appreciate any ideas on achieving this. I've been struggling to try to do this for 4 months.

Arms don't need to lift - right arm folding properly with good pivot will do the job. Yes need sufficient side bend - replacing forward flex at setup with roughly equal amount of side bend. Depending on how much one has to start with then adding enough side bend can feel really, really steep. I start my takeaway by having my left shoulder move down to my toes - it doesn't but it gets me going on side bend early - I feel like I'm rotating around my sternum.

Wall drill is good. Here is another.

If you look at the height of your hands at address (even with your waist) and again at the top of your swing (above your shoulders) you can easily see that raising your arms is a necessary part of a golf swing. One way to look at it would be like a clock , our hands at address are at the bottom 6 0'clock then as we turn back the left arm turns as it rotates outward/upward to 9 0'clock and on plane with the club face.

Absolutely no need to lift the arms - the lead arm raises due to the trail elbow folding. The turn with tilted shoulders raises the trail arm and with the fold in the elbow, the lead arm goes up.

People do lift (and they fly that trail elbow too) but then they need to undo that lift in transition/downswing - impact depends on how well they do this - just adds a level of inconsistency.

And here is Monte (iteach attached in the thread I attached in post #2) - note his right elbow. No lift going on here - it stays in same place relative to his ribcage. Try it - get into golf setup, fold trail elbow about 90 degrees then make a pivot without further moving the arms - viola hands at the top. People open up a lot of issues cause they don't understand how the trail arm/elbow works and it's relationship to the trail shoulder - end up requiring compensations in transition to get back into position - plenty more details in thread I attached - beware the troll(s) though.

Get into your address posture without a club. Put the fingertips of your right hand on top of your right shoulder. Now unfold your right arm and hand to approx a 90* angle as you turn. That's the back swing orientation of your right hand and arm to your shoulders. Ideally you should be able to reach your right hand with your left hand. If you're not flexible enough to do that it's okay.

It's just very difficult for anyone to make an athletic move with a flat back swing. Even MLB shortstops who throw side arm to first base take their arm back steep, step into the throw, drop their arm into the side arm slot and fire through. Golf is no different.

Take the club up steeper, use your legs, and fire through the shot. Get athletic instead of the rigid back and through you have now.

I suffer from having a flatish backswing and work on it frequently - always looking for different drills etc to use - Cogorno had this recent video which I like - and is actually what I do to start my takeaway - turn down the left shoulder
